A rather grand driveway lined with topiaries leads you up through the gates to the house that sits in extensive, secluded garden grounds.
Inside, the grand sitting room is a lovely place to gather in the evenings with a crackling open fire that just begs to be curled up in front of.
At the heart of the kitchen is a huge Aga that is great for cooking up a storm and keeps the place nice and toasty. A central island provides space for informal dining or breakfasting and off the kitchen is a utility room that houses the laundry facilities and dishwasher, with a wet room off it. From there a handy door leads out to the patio area.
Upstairs off the hallway are three very spacious double bedrooms that have been decorated in stylish muted tones that give a very luxurious feel. There is also a family bathroom with a traditional claw foot bath and hand shower over.
There are plenty of places to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet in the pretty gardens and a patio seating area allows for al fresco dining in good weather. Children are sure to love the treehouse in the garden where they can spend hours playing.
The Allanton Inn in Allanton (2.5 miles) has an excellent restaurant and a fine selection of gins to sample. It also has a beer garden and offers permits for fishing on the nearby Whiteadder Water.
At Berwick-upon-Tweed (9.5 miles) there are lots of shops, cafés, pubs and supermarkets for stocking up on supplies. On the way it is worth stopping off at Paxton House for a tour around this 18th century Palladian country house and its large collection of Chippendale furniture.
Catch the train from Berwick and arrive up into the centre of Edinburgh in only around 45 minutes for a day of shopping or sightseeing in Scotland’s magnificent capital.
The coastline around Berwick has several lovely sandy beaches that are lovely to walk along and are a great draw for surfers. Heading further down the coast a tidal causeway links the mainland up with Holy Island so, depending on the tide times, you can drive right over to the home of the famous Lindesfarne Mead.
After a walk on the beach a visit to Eyemouth for some fish and chips will definitely be in order. You can also feed the seals down by the harbour or pay a visit to the interesting Maritime Centre there.
On the Hirsel Estate just outside Coldstream (13 miles) is a picturesque 18 hole golf course, a tearoom and 36 acres of grounds with various waymarked walks to try out. A particularly pretty walk leads around the Dundock Woods which are a riot of colour in May/June when a mass of rhododendrons and azaleas burst into bloom.
