Dorlin Cottage has arguably the most spectacular view, looking over the beach to the iconic ruin of Castle Tioram in the bay. This substantial, stone-built property sits in its own grounds off a private estate road and is one of five cottages on the Lochshiel Estate near Acharacle, 45 miles from Fort William on Scotland’s west coast.

Originally built as a chapel in early Victorian times, the cottage has been impressively converted and refurbished while retaining its traditional charm. Wildlife abounds in the area, with deer frequently spotted near the house and along the shoreline.
A most attractive, detached property, Dorlin Cottage is beautifully furnished in a classical style to complement its character. The welcoming, stone-flagged entrance hall leads to a stunning, spacious kitchen/diner, equipped to an exceptionally high standard with a range cooker, generous storage, modern appliances, and a natural stone floor. The elegant sitting room, with its arched window and substantial wood-burning stove, provides the perfect retreat for long, cosy evenings. A snug with an open fire adds even more charm, and the ground floor also features a shower room and laundry facilities.
Upstairs, a double bedroom with a king-size bed and two twin bedrooms offer comfortable accommodation for families or groups. The main bathroom, with a bath, WC, and wash basin, completes the layout.
The cottage's large garden, fringed by mature trees and bushes, provides a private and peaceful setting just a stone’s throw from the shore. Spectacular sunsets are common here, with the west-facing aspect offering stunning evening skies over the ‘Small Isles’ of Rum, Eigg, and Muck.
A truly special coastal escape, Dorlin Cottage combines historic charm, modern comforts, and an unforgettable setting.
The estate and area around Loch Moidart is a paradise for nature lovers. Seals and otters swim in its waters, red deer roam the hills, and eagles soar above. The estate offers excellent walking, with woodland trails and quiet beaches to explore.
Dorlin Bay, a short walk away, is home to the romantic ruins of Castle Tioram, the ancient stronghold of Clan Ranald. The area is steeped in history, particularly its ties to the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. Bonnie Prince Charlie launched his campaign at Glenfinnan (28 miles away), now famous for its railway viaduct featured in the Harry Potter films. The National Trust site at Glenfinnan includes a monument offering panoramic views over Loch Shiel.
In summer, the steam train from Fort William to Mallaig crosses the viaduct on one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys. Mallaig (34 miles) is a bustling fishing port with ferries to Skye and boat trips to the ‘Small Isles’ of Rum, Eigg, and Muck from Arisaig (26 miles). The beaches of Arisaig and Morar, with their silver sands and turquoise waters, offer breathtaking views of Rum and Eigg. These idyllic shores were also made famous by the 1983 film Local Hero.
No visit is complete without exploring the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, the westernmost point of mainland Britain. The Stevenson lighthouse at Ardnamurchan Point and the stunning sands of Sanna Bay are must-sees. The winding road west from Salen is a delight, passing through Glenborrodale, home to an RSPB reserve where birdwatchers may spot wood warblers, redstarts, and even golden eagles. Otters and red squirrels are often seen here too.
For cycling enthusiasts, the quiet roads around Acharacle (2 miles) are ideal, while a more adventurous route follows the gravel track along Loch Shiel from Polloch to Glenfinnan – a 25-mile round trip offering stunning views of the loch and surrounding mountains.
Acharacle has a well-stocked village store and a hotel, with more shopping in Mallaig. There are also a couple of restaurants in Acharacle, though visitors should check opening times in advance. Those looking for a round of golf can visit Traigh Golf Course, north of Arisaig, renowned for its scenic coastal setting and spectacular views over the isles.
