Everything has been thought in order to create the best holiday possible and the immediate impression on arrival is one of delight at the high standard of presentation throughout. With a gorgeous expanse of sand just a couple of minutes’ walk away, time can be spent on the beach and the house is handy enough to pop back to if need be.
Cosy comfort is what comes to mind in the light and bright sitting room that has a wood-burning stove to radiate warmth and provide a lovely focal point. Off the sitting room is a sunroom where the amazing views out to sea and the mountains of Arran beyond are perfectly showcased. It is a wonderful place to catch up on a good book and doors lead to patio seating for outdoor eating or enjoying a coffee in the sun. Having a downstairs double bedroom and shower room is great for those with mobility challenges and the utility room is a useful addition to any holiday home.
The other delightful bedrooms (one double and one single with a pull-out bed underneath) are upstairs where the elevated position make the stunning views of the water and boats bobbing in the distance the star of the show. It really is a blissful way to be greeted when waking up in the mornings.
Park right by the door and once the gate is shut the mature garden is fully enclosed so children and pets can make the absolute most of it. The huge lawn lets them properly stretch their legs and the outside tap is ideal for cleaning up after running around. A pleasant walk leads down to picturesque St Ninian’s Bay where lots of birdlife can be spotted including sea eagles that are a truly awesome sight.
Access to the wonderful Isle of Bute is via an easy 35 minute ferry crossing from Wemyss Bay in Renfrewshire on the mainland, arriving into Rothesay (4 miles) just a 10 minute drive from the cottage. Cars can be taken over or left behind for exploration on foot (or bike) for a welcome change.
The island was dubbed the ‘Best Place to Live in Scotland 2022’ by the Sunday Times and it is easy to see why. Rothesay, the main settlement, is the spot to head to for pubs, restaurants, shops and supermarket shopping as well as the rather unusual visitor attraction of its Victorian toilets.
Take a trip back in time with a visit to the early medieval Rothesay Castle and its impressive moat and also Mount Stuart, a gothic mansion with 300 acres of fabulous gardens to wander around and an incredibly grand interior that has to be seen to be believed.
Paddle boards can be hired from Rothesay for days on the water and boat trips head out further with the opportunity to spot a range of wildlife with everything from dolphins and seal to basking sharks and minke whales.
Bute is only 15 miles long and less than 5 miles wide but there is certainly plenty to see and do and a lovely mild microclimate thanks to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream that allows palm trees to thrive. The beach at Ettrick Bay is particularly scenic to walk along no matter what the weather.
Bikes can be hired on the island and there is the chance to have a go on an e-bike that takes some of the work out of things, although there aren’t many hills to tackle as the landscape is fairly flat. A circular cycle route loops all the way around the coastline and there are several mountain biking trails to try too.
