Wakefield House
Near West Linton, Scottish Borders
Maybe it sounds too good to be true - a beautiful house tucked away among the hills without another house in sight from its front windows and yet within a half-hour drive of Edinburgh.

True it is though at Wakefield House, this most desirable of holiday homes. It is situated just 2 miles (within walking distance for the energetic) out of the pretty conservation village of West Linton (with shops, pubs and restaurants). A gracious country house, it sits in its own large garden at the centre of a large country estate with a little stream down the slope to the side (care to be taken with children) and lovely views across the valley to the hills beyond.
Inside, the owners have combined elegance and comfort with a wonderful sense of light and space. On the ground floor are two charming sitting rooms that are quite different in character, so you can vary your choice according to your mood. One of the sitting rooms has a TV and cosy wood-burning stove and is definitely a place to lounge around. The other sitting room is rather beautiful, very comfortable and perhaps more formal, with an open fire in an impressive fireplace.
The kitchen is very spacious with a breakfast bar and separate dining area, as well as a door to that leads out to a terrace (with furniture), where you can breakfast out in the sunshine. Also on this level is a single bedroom (with pull-out bed underneath) and a bath/shower room.
On the mezzanine is a magnificent dining area, with a door leading out to a charming balcony (with furniture) that is perfect for pre-dinner drinks.
Upstairs are two double bedrooms, a twin bedroom and a bathroom with bath and separate shower. The double bedrooms are both very spacious and beautifully furnished. The master room forms what could be a small separate suite with a dressing area and the bathroom adjacent, though this is also perfectly accessible from the other bedrooms without encroaching on anyone’s privacy.
Video Walkthrough
There are lovely hill and river walks to be enjoyed right from the door and where the road ends there is a reservoir. It may also be possible to arrange shooting and fishing in season on the estate.
The Edinburgh dry ski slope is within a 20 minute drive and West Linton Golf Course is just over a mile from the house.
Should you decide to visit Scotland's lovely capital city Edinburgh during your stay, yet avoid any traffic and parking problems, then buses pass regularly through the village. On the way, you can make a small diversion to view Roslin Chapel, that was well worth a visit even before it shot to fame courtesy of Dan Brown in 'The Da Vinci Code'.
To the south, you have all the Scottish Borders to explore, with more opportunities for wonderful walking, for world class mountain biking, riding and exploring a host of old Scottish keeps and castles. Another must see over to the west is The World Heritage Site at New Lanark, together with the spectacular falls of Clyde. Glasgow, of course, has all the shops, restaurants, and theatre you could wish for and is always well worth a visit.
