This must surely be the way to get the best of both worlds! Edinburgh on the doorstep and yet a peaceful and leafy base to return to after a day at work or play in the capital! Yet The Crewman's Quarters just across the Forth Bridge near Rosyth offers just that.

This substantial, semi-detached villa has a commanding position on a wooded hillside above the Firth of Forth in the grounds of the owner's country estate. Once home to the Admiral's barge crew, (the white-painted companion way leading up to the back of the house is a reminder of its nautical history) the house has now been beautifully renovated and refurbished to provide an elegant, spacious and most comfortable holiday home.
A large glazed porch leads into an impressive quarry-tiled hallway, off which, to one side, is a roomy modern kitchen and beyond that a small conservatory with dining table. To the other side is the main living room, also stylishly quarry-tiled, with wood-burning stove.
Upstairs are three bedrooms, the master with an en suite bath/shower room and a dressing room with French door to the slope at the back of the house, a twin and a single room. There is also a further bathroom.
The house has impeccable green credentials, with ground source heating and solar panels.
Outside there is parking for several cars at the door and there is a small outside seating area to the front (with furniture). There is also a small play area within 70 yards of the house.
Despite its quiet situation, you are very much at the centre of things at the Crewman's Quarters, barely half a mile from the M90 Edinburgh-Perth motorway which gives access not only to the city but to the north and Fife as well.
An alternative is to make the 3 minute drive to the Park and Ride or to the station at Inverkeithing or Rosyth and catch the train into the city - a memorable trip across the Forth Rail Bridge.
Buses run to the airport but the estate gardener has a taxi and could take you wherever you wanted to go, including to and from the station if you were planning a more convivial night on the town! The owner may also be able to obtain tickets for you for the legendary Edinburgh Tattoo if you choose to come to the cottage during the Festival. There really are lots and lots of extras to be enjoyed at the Crewman's Quarters!
With such excellent transport connections, it follows that from here you can enjoy some excellent touring. One local attraction which you might wish to include is the National Trust Village at Culross (pronounced Kooros), just along the coast. A little further to the west is Stirling with its castle and Wallace Monument, that is also well worth a visit, and from there is it less than an hour's drive to Loch Lomond and the beautiful Trossachs.
