Overview

One of the most spectacular parts of its coastline is at Carsaig, where there is both a beach and dramatic cliffs. Tucked away at the end of a little single track road, 4 miles off the main thoroughfare (also a single track road) between Craignure and Fionnphort at the southwest corner, it is a place of blissful quiet and tranquillity.

East Carsaig is a semi detached white cottage, that is simply but comfortably furnished. With its mirror image, West Carsaig Cottage, it stands quite alone, facing south to the distant isles of Jura, Colonsay and Islay.

Inside the cottage has been considerably upgraded with new furnishings and double glazed windows for warmth. The elegant sitting room has comfortable seating grouped cosily round a wood burning stove at one end and a dining area at the other end by the window. Beyond that is the well-equipped kitchen that has plenty of room for cooking and also has a further dining area.

Upstairs are three bedrooms, a double and two twins all of which are attractively furnished with slightly coombed ceilings and large windows from which to admire the surrounding countryside. A family bathroom completes the indoor accommodation.

The fenced grassed garden area outside (shared with West Carsaig) has wonderful views to sit and admire. A small burn runs down by the side and front of the cottage (outside the garden) and across the 250 yards of grass and rocky foreshore which leads to a beautiful long sandy beach. Those who appreciate somewhere to relax in most beautiful surroundings will find this spot truly idyllic, while children will love the freedom to play far from traffic and other constraints.

Please note: Ferry tickets over to Mull should be booked with CalMac Ferries at the time of booking your stay in order to ensure availability.

Map & Local

This area is teeming with wildlife in land, sea and air - seals, otters, sea eagles, deer and even the occasional whale, to name but a few.

The nearest shop and restaurant are 6 miles away. If you can bear to leave this little slice of heaven for a day, however, you will find another at the end of the road at Fionnphort, for where you can take the little foot ferry across to Iona.

The wondrous island of Iona has been a place of pilgrimage for over 14 centuries and it’s amazing aura remains unaffected by the crowds of tourists who descend on it daily - something definitely not to be missed. From Fionnphort too, you can take boat trips to view the remarkable rock formations of Staffa and the puffin colonies on the Treshnish Isles.

While these are the nearest attractions, Mull has a great deal more to offer. It is only a 45 minute drive back to the ferry terminal at Craignure, which is where the fast road begins which takes you up to Salen and the ‘capital’ Tobermory. This charming and picturesque little town (all facilities) with its brightly painted houses that are recognisable from a zillion souvenir calendars, clusters round its harbour which is usually well populated with sailing boats. From there you can cross the top of the island to Dervaig, home of the Mull Little Theatre, then ‘stampede’ on to the wonderful beach at the original Calgary, as different from its Canadian namesake as day and night.

A drive up the entire west coast of the island is another wonderful experience. From the Craignure road, turn on to the B8035 to Gruline and the ‘Scenic route to Salen’. This coast road affords breathtaking views away to Coll and Tiree. There is riding at Gruline, and it is worth continuing up the coast to the memorial Cross at Ulva, the Eas Fors waterfall and on once again to Dervaig. You will then be able to say that you’ve pretty well ‘done’ Mull!
