Pier Cottage
Carsaig, Pennyghael, Isle of Mull
AX2Pier Cottage is idyllically situated just yards from the shore near picturesque Carsaig on the southernmost side of the Ross of Mull, with glorious views across the sea to the misty isles of Scarba, Jura, Islay and Colonsay.
While the immediate shore is rocky, there is an extensive sandy beach just quarter of a mile away at Carsaig Bay. This traditional whitewashed stone cottage is conveniently arranged on one level. Having been in the McLean family for over 50 years, it has a homely, lived-in feel.
The cottage has a huge fan club of devoted visitors who return year after year to revel in the wonderful situation, the plentiful local wildlife on land, sea and air (which can most often be viewed without even leaving the cottage) and the quirky, unique character of the house itself. The large living room has a wood-burning stove and there is also a large sun-porch with a luxuriant vine. There is also a double bedroom with wood-burning stove and a small twin bedroom.
The careful upgrading which has taken place in the form of the new kitchen and bathroom and new flooring in the sun porch, has made it much more practical and comfortable. It still retains some of the original features such as the wood panelling and exposed walls, which give it its charmingly rustic ambience.
Children will revel in the freedom of the surroundings - there is a lawn in front of the cottage leading down to the rocks and the sea, a wooded area and a wild garden. Be sure to keep an eye out for some of the local wildlife as nesting eagles, otters, seals and dolphins are often spotted out in the bay. At Pier Cottage it will clearly be a continuing case of ‘book early to avoid disappointment’!

The cottage is reached by a private road from Carsaig Pier and is under an hour from the ferry terminal at Craignure.
In the other direction is lovely Iona and in summer there are boat trips from Bunessan (15 miles) and Fionnphort to Fingal's Cave on Staffa and the Treshnish Isles.
This beautiful area is ideal for walking, fishing, painting and spending long lazy days on the beach. Those in search of history will enjoy Duart Castle, the ancestral seat of the Clan MacLean, in its dominating position above the Sound of Mull.
It is worth making the 50 mile journey to Tobermory, Mull's only town, with its famous coloured houses clustered round the harbour. You might combine that trip with a memorable visit to the Mull Little Theatre at Dervaig. There is a Post Office/Shop, Pub and hotel at Pennygael (6.5 miles).

On our approach to Pier.Cottage our anticipation was building, from the road over the hill to the drive past the pier and then the views.. Jura, Islay and the Sound of Mull basking in unexpected spring sunshine. A great week followed exploring the charming Isles of Mull and Iona. We were blessed with a great week of weather just to top off visiting one of the most special places. We cannot wait to return.
