Loch Lomond must be one of the best known beauty spots in Scotland, a further advantage being that it is not only a lovely place, but is also within a half hour drive of Glasgow.

This has resulted in the west shore of the loch being very well developed with prestigious hotels, golf courses, marinas, etc. On the east shore, however, it is a very different story...
A little winding road leads along the lochside from Balmaha (with hotel and shop) to stop just beyond the hotel at Rowardennan. Just before the hotel you will find Ben Lomond Lodge, which has a superb position right on the shores of the loch. Loch Lomond Lodge is right next door, giving the possibility for larger parties to holiday together while retaining an element of independence.
This may be a pine lodge but it is a very well appointed, upmarket one indeed! The extensive open plan living area is elegantly furnished with smart, comfortable seating around the gas-fired stove that keeps it nice and cosy. The kitchen and dining areas are conveniently placed next to each other and the many windows ensure that the entire room is bright and sunny all day long.
There are French doors opening to a superb decking area (with furniture) where you can watch the children play on the grassed area between the lodge and the loch, or sit with an evening drink and admire the view. You are also excellently placed here on the east side of the loch to watch the famous West Scotland sunsets.
All on one level there are four bedrooms, two double and two twin rooms. The carpeted bedrooms are well furnished in pine throughout, and children will love the soft toys waiting to greet them in the twin. The master double bedroom has its own shower room and the family bathroom, with a shower over the bath, completes the accommodation. The wood panelling and flooring throughout is of excellent quality – Ben Lomond Lodge is most certainly not your average rugged log cabin!
At Rowardennan, you are in the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, the West Highland Way runs close by and in the mountains behind you have the choice of Ben Lomond itself (Scotland's most southerly munro) or Bens Vrackie and Uird to climb.
Loch Lomond is notable for sailing and there is a slipway close to the Lodge. From Balmaha, boats can be hired for fishing in the loch. You can take a 2 hour trip on the mail boat (which delivers mail to the islands in the loch) that is an excellent way of seeing the surrounding area other than by car.
Golfers will doubtless know the prestigious Loch Lomond Golf Course and there are several other good courses also within a short distance.
For trips further afield, no visit would be complete without a day in Glasgow (about 45 minutes by car or go by train from Balloch), with its excellent shopping, amazing architecture and world-class restaurants and entertainments. If you are into architecture, you don't even have to go that far for a taste of Charles Rennie Mackintosh - his Hill House is just over the hill from the foot of the loch at Helensburgh. To the north and west, the west coast at Oban or the Kintyre peninsula are easily accessible.
