The Nest is a traditional, detached cottage occupying an idyllic position right on the shore of Loch Long in the little settlement of Portincaple near Helensburgh (9.5 miles) in Argyll.
Wonderful loch views can be admired from most of the house and, in particular, from the drawing room where the bay window really showcases the vista. The drawing room is warmed by an attractive open fire and it leads through to a conservatory/sunroom from which French doors lead out to a lovely raised deck area with seating to watch the boats bobbing out on the loch from.
At the heart of the spacious kitchen is a huge range cooker that makes short work of whipping up culinary delights and the sitting room is dominated by an open fire that sits in an ornate Art Nouveau fireplace. The Art Nouveau touches continue in the hallway where there is a beautiful stained glass window and there is also a formal dining room and modern family bathroom on this level.
Two of the bedrooms (both doubles) are downstairs and a cast iron spiral staircase leads upstairs where there are three further bedrooms, two doubles and a single, that have coombed ceilings and share a handy WC and cosy central seating area.
Extensive gardens with lots of mature trees and plants surround the house and lead right down to the water’s edge where you can fish directly from the shore or simply admire the light dancing on the water.
A few shops and eateries can be found in Garelochhead (1.5 miles) that is on part of the Three Lochs Way walking trail that can be followed in either direction taking in Gare Loch, Loch Lomond and Loch Long within its 34 mile route.
The attractive seaside town of Helensburgh (9.5 miles) has a sand and shingle beach that is lovely to walk along and perhaps do some paddling. The town is known for its connections to Charles Rennie Mackintosh whose famous Hill House dating back to 1904 still stands to this day as a fine example of his forward thinking design work.
Golfers are very well catered for as there are several golf courses to choose from nearby. Helensburgh has an 18 hole course and there are also courses at Cardross (14 miles) and Alexandria (18.5 miles).
Just 4 miles away is the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park where there are a whole host of outdoor activities with everything from walking, hiking and mountain climbing to watersports, cycling and mountain biking.
It is less than an hour’s drive to bustling Glasgow or simply jump on the train at Garelochhead and arrive into the city centre in just over an hour without the hassle of finding parking. As well as all the shops, pubs and restaurants you could wish for, Glasgow has cultural sights such as Glasgow Cathedral, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and the Riverside Museum to visit.
