The lodge was actually the first log cabin in Scotland when it was imported from Sweden back in 1964. It offers roomy, contemporary accommodation that makes the perfect base for getting out exploring all of the nearby attractions. Nestled into the historic Strathardle glen and against the River Ardle, between Bridge of Cally and Pitlochry, Woodhill offers a unique, rural haven for walkers and families alike.
At the heart of the lodge the large sitting room is very warm and inviting with its traditional wooden walls and feature stone fireplace which houses a wood-burning stove. It is L-shaped to the dining area and off it lies a sunny conservatory with further seating and lovely views out to the garden. The newly-appointed kitchen is equipped with everything needed and there is a little utility area with laundry facilities, a boot room with loads of storage and a shower room just off it.
The lodge has five bedrooms (four attractive double bedrooms and a single room) all lying off an airy central hallway. It is all laid out on one level and the whole place is kept nice and toasty by underfloor heating.
There is a fully enclosed front garden that is great for children and pets to run around in. Behind the lodge the large garden leads off towards the fields beyond - there is a large pond within the grounds so care should be taken. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of a roe deer wandering through the garden.
Plenty of parking space is provided and the lodge is reached via quarter of a mile of private, single track road that should be driven slowly.
The hill behind the house is heather moorland with a walk that leads up to Charles loch for wild brown trout fishing, so it is well worth bringing along the fishing gear and making use of the newly built boathouse.
Just 300 metres from the lodge, the Cateran Trail circular walking route can be walked in either direction - up towards Spittal of Glenshee or south towards Blairgowrie. This 64-mile path runs through the scenic Perthshire and Angus glens, following in the footsteps of the Cateran cattle thieves who made use of these remote drove roads from the Middle Ages up until the 17th century.
Kirkmichael (4 miles) has a shop for basic supplies, or there is a supermarket in Blairgowrie (9 miles). For a really different experience, at the Bowland Trails a few miles out of Blairgowrie there are dog sledding experiences on offer with a pack of huskies that lead exhilarating rides through the countryside.
At the Persie Distillery (7 miles) a variety of different gins are produced and, as well as the usual tours and tasting sessions, there are cocktail masterclasses and gin and food pairings available.
Perthshire Wildlife (19 miles) runs guided wildlife walks and Beaver Safaris with the chance to observe European beavers in the wild from the comfort of a canoe or kayak. Glenshee (22 miles) is the place to head for skiing and snowboarding in season.
If a day trip into the city beckons then Perth is reachable in under an hour’s drive where, as well as all the expected shops, pubs and eateries, there are lots of historical points of interest. The Black Watch Castle and Museum tells the story of Scotland’s oldest Highland Regiment and Elcho Castle by the River Tay is incredibly well preserved and quite fascinating to wander around.
