Tigh Na Tri Cottage is a charming traditional, stonebuilt cottage set in the heart of the picturesque village of Braemar in the Highlands, within the Cairngorms National Park.
This cosy retreat makes a great base for exploring the delights of Royal Deeside and is a real pleasure to come back ‘home’ to. The sitting room is the ideal place to relax after a day spent out exploring, with an appropriate Highland theme throughout and a wood-burning stove to warm your feet in front of. The bright dining kitchen has views out over the garden and a door leading out to it.
There is a handy double bedroom and contemporary shower room with walk-in shower downstairs and upstairs is a further attractive double bedroom and a twin bedroom with coombed ceilings.
The cottage has parking right by the door and a sloping grassed garden area to the front with seating from which you can watch the world go by and enjoy views out across the village to the mountains beyond.
To the rear is a more private enclosed garden with a lovely decked seating area and steps leading up to a pretty lawn.
Braemar is lovely to wander around with lots of interesting little shops to explore and a choice of places to dine if a night off from cooking beckons. The golf course on the outskirts of the village welcomes visitors with day passes and club hire available. It is a fairly flat course considering it is the highest 18 hole course in the UK, sitting 1,200 feet above sea level!
If you are lucky enough to visit Braemar on the first Saturday in September then you are in for a real treat in the form of the renowned Braemar Gathering. The gathering has been run since 1832 with traditional Scottish dancing, music and highland games drawing in crowds from all over the country. As part of the event a procession of pipers march through the village to the games field – it is really quite the spectacle.
There are lots of waymarked walking routes around the village. The Lion’s Face and the Cromlins circular walk runs right past the cottage and takes in a rocky crag that is said to resemble a lion. The Queen’s Drive circular route also runs right past the cottage, following along the River Clunie with wonderful views back towards Braemar. Part of the walk is an old carriage route that was a favourite of Queen Victoria (thus the name).
There are several Munros and Corbetts nearby so Munro ‘baggers’ will be kept very busy. Just outside the village is Morrone, a Corbett that takes about 4 to 5 hours to climb but rewards climbers with wonderful panoramic views of the Cairngorms from the summit.
The nearby River Dee is world renowned for its salmon fishing and permits are available from the Tourist Information Centre. There is skiing and snowboarding at Glenshee (9 miles) and ski equipment is available for hire in the village so you don’t have to bring it all with you.Braemar Highland Experience offers interesting off road 4x4 tours that showcase some of the spectacular scenery in the area that isn’t usually accessible by car, with knowledgeable guides and a vast array of wildlife to spot along the way including deer, grouse, mountain hares, ospreys and sea eagles.
