Overview

With great eco credentials and a charming living grass roof that allows it to merge into its surroundings, the house offers a rare blend of both style and substance. In fact, it has been shortlisted for the Scottish Design Awards 2023 for its wonderful architecture. Inside, the contemporary space has been cleverly designed and dressed with a delightful mix of retro pieces set against industrial modernity that is sure to be an instant hit with everyone that stays.

Right at centre stage is the open plan sitting/dining room/kitchen with its bank of huge windows that perfectly showcase breathtaking floor-to-ceiling mountain views. As the incredible wood-burning stove is ceiling-hung it creates the illusion of it floating and means that the fire can be enjoyed at the same time as the beautiful scenery. This is a chance to fully disconnect from the outside world and have break away from the TV, although WiFi is provided for planning out the day’s agenda.

In the impressive master bedroom the snuggly chaise longue by the window may be hard to tear oneself away from and there is even a high level window in the sleek en suite shower room to keep a further eye on that view from. The other two spacious double bedrooms are equally appealing and incredibly bright due to their large picture windows that show off the woodland and winding River Don that is a real treat to wake up to.

Everything is on the one level and has been very well insulated against the elements, as well as having the added luxury of underfloor heating. Sit around the fire pit out on the deck area to fully appreciate the landscape laid out before it and watch buzzards soaring majestically overhead.

The house sits against the rugged backdrop of the hill behind and is accessed by 500 metres of steep, rough track that may not be suitable for low slung vehicles. It should be driven very slowly and carefully, being sure to watch out for friendly sheep on the approach and in poor weather there is the option of parking in the nearby castle car park and walking the last section.

Map & Local

It may be tempting to stay put and drink in the wonderful setting but as the house is in the Cairngorms National Park there is so much to explore that even a week’s stay may not be quite enough. Just a 10 minute walk away is Glenbuchat Castle, a medieval z-plan tower house that has a fascinating history.

The Steading Bar (4 miles) is handy to head to for bar food or a drink, with a fine selection of whiskies to sample, or the Kildrummy Inn (6 miles) offers a more formal dining option.

Pop into the little friendly shop in Bellabeg (5 miles) for a pint of milk or there is a supermarket for further supplies in Alford (15 miles). Whilst in Alford the Grampian Transport Museum is an interesting place to stop off at with its unusual displays of interactive vehicle exhibits and a particular highlight being the Guy Martin Collection.

If the preference is getting out and about on four legs there are horse riding lessons and hacking on offer at the Glen Tanar Equestrian Centre (17 miles) as well as fishing on a nearby loch. Braemar (30 miles) is known for its famous Highland Games, the Braemar Gathering, but is also a very picturesque village to wander around with some lovely shops to peruse and great souvenirs to take home.

Those looking to indulge in snowsports will enjoy the excellent facilities and choice of ski lifts at the Lecht Ski Centre (16 miles) or bikes can be hired at Ballater (19 miles) in order to take advantage of the quiet local roads.
