Muckrach Castle offers a unique self-catering experience in Speyside in the Scottish Highlands, standing proudly within its own grounds overlooking the River Dulnain. Located just 4 miles from Grantown-on-Spey this splendid rural retreat provides outstanding views over the Spey Valley and the Cairngorm Mountains.
This striking tower house commands attention on the horizon, visible from the road. As you approach via a short country track (0.2 miles), the castle seamlessly blends contemporary elegance and timeless rustic charm.
Dating back to 1583, this fully restored sixteenth-century castle was the ancestral home of the Grants of Rothiemurchus. It remained in ruins for centuries until its restoration between 1978 and 1985, when a stone bearing the family arms was returned from Rothiemurchus and set above the door.
The accommodation is arranged over four main floors and two tower rooms, accessible by spiral stone stairs. The ‘Great Hall’ on the first floor, with its antique pine panelling, cosy window seats and wood-burning stove provides a comfortable and inviting space for relaxation and entertainment, complete with a TV and DVD player.
The second floor features a master bedroom suite with an antique four-poster bed, a free-standing bath, and a shower room close by with a WC. This shower room is also accessible from the twin and bunk rooms on the upper floors.
The third floor houses a tower bunk room with bunk beds and distinctive tartan décor adds a touch of quirkiness. On the fourth floor, you will find two further twin bedrooms, each with wash-hand basins and window seats with a view. There is also a bathroom on this level.
A few steps above the fourth floor, another tower bunk room provides additional sleeping options. Muckrach Castle offers central heating in the bedrooms and bathrooms, and portable oil-filled radiators to ensure a cosy stay in all seasons.
Conveniently, at the entrance to the castle you will find a vestibule for coats and shoes, leading to a magnificent, vaulted stone kitchen and dining room. The fully equipped kitchen, with a large table seating ten, is perfect for family gatherings, culinary delights and special occasions.
Next to the kitchen, the conservatory offers a serene space for relaxation, with large patio doors opening to an enclosed lawn area. A small stone spiral stair leads to the utility room, complete with a washing machine and tumble dryer for added convenience.
Outside, the castle garden invites exploration and relaxation. The grounds offer ample parking for at least 4 cars. Due to the unique and historic nature of the building, with steep and winding stone stairs to the bedrooms, Muckrach Castle is not suitable for those with mobility issues and young children should be supervised on the stairs. Free Wi-Fi is provided, though the castle’s thick walls may limit its reach in some areas.
