Overview

Tucked away on a peaceful croft in Bogallen on the Black Isle peninsula, Herdsman’s Cottage offers a cosy country retreat, just 6 miles north of Inverness. This charming cottage is perfectly situated for exploring the Moray Firth and the scenic north-east coast of Scotland.

This 200-year-old traditional cottage has been thoughtfully renovated in a contemporary style, carefully preserving its charming original features. Herdsman's Cottage is designed for comfort in all seasons, with thick walls, double glazing, a multi-fuel stove, and electric heating ensuring warmth and cosiness.

The open-plan living area has been thoughtfully planned as a social space, where you can enjoy each other’s company while preparing meals, dining, or relaxing in front of the woodburning stove and taking in the lovely views of the picturesque highland scenery, with Ben Wyvis visible in the distance. The vaulted ceiling with exposed wooden beams creates a spacious yet cosy atmosphere.

The cottage features two tastefully furnished ground-floor bedrooms, ideal for those with limited mobility. Both the double and twin bedrooms include quality Sanderson bedding, TVs, and en suite facilities with underfloor heating for added comfort. Natural wood accents throughout the cottage enhances its rustic charm. Upstairs, an attractive galleried snug provides a cosy retreat for reading or unwinding after a day of exploration.

The cottage's green credentials are impressive, with excellent insulation and solar panels that generate most of its electricity, earning it a Green Tourism Silver Award. Additionally, it has been approved by the Walkers' and Cyclists' Welcome Schemes, offering lockable bike storage and a drying area for wet boots and clothes.

Outside, the extensive grass garden invites guests to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. The patio area, complete with furniture, is perfect for outdoor dining or simply soaking up the sun and the views. The garden also features fruit trees, a wildflower area, and shrubs specifically planted to attract wildlife, providing a haven for birds and insects. Just a two-minute walk away, the mixed woodland offers numerous paths for walking and cycling, with opportunities to observe red kites nesting in the tall pine trees and deer roaming in the woods.

Parking is available on the property, ensuring easy access to the cottage. The surrounding area offers numerous attractions, including gentle Highland cattle on the owners' working croft, beautiful sunsets and, with the right conditions, the Northern Lights, providing a magical end to your day.

Herdsman's Cottage is the perfect base for families, groups, and nature lovers seeking a peaceful retreat with modern amenities. Its prime location and thoughtful comforts make it an ideal choice for an unforgettable holiday in the stunning Scottish Highlands.

Map & Local

The Black Isle, despite its name, is not an island, but a peninsula on the northeast coast of Scotland, just north of Inverness, accessible via the Kessock bridge from the south. Bogallan is in an excellent location for exploring the Black Isle and Inverness, which is just under 7 miles to the south.

If you need to stock up on supplies or wish to dine out, Inverness has a lot to offer. The city boasts a wide range of shops and supermarkets, ensuring you can find everything from daily essentials to specialty items.

For dining, Inverness features an excellent array of cafes, restaurants, and bars to suit all tastes and preferences. Whether you're in the mood for a casual coffee, a hearty pub meal, or fine dining with local Scottish cuisine, you'll find plenty of options to satisfy your cravings.

There are some picturesque fishing villages with lovely beaches on the Black Isle that are well worth a visit such as Avoch (6 miles) Fortrose (7 miles) and Rosemarkie (8 miles) with its long white beach complete with beach cafe.

The Black Isle is renowned as one of Europe's premier destinations for dolphin watching. Chanonry Point (9 miles away) is widely regarded as the prime location to observe the Moray dolphins, especially during a rising tide when they frequently gather to feed.

If you enjoy exploring mountain biking trails, there are plenty to choose from on the Black Isle from the MTB Trail Centre at Learnie Red Rock, to the scenic Rosemarkie Beach to Chanonry Point route known as the Dolphin Mile, where you will get a chance to see these majestic animals in their natural habitat.

For those who prefer to explore on foot, the choice of beautiful routes is endless, such as Ord Hill (4 miles), a forested ridge with stunning views over Inverness and beyond. The renowned long-distance walk, The John o' Groats Trail, traverses the Black Isle during its early stages: Stage 1 from Inverness to Culbokie, and Stage 2 from Culbokie to Alness.

Golfers will be spoilt for choice with ten golf courses to choose from within easy reach of Herdsman’s Cottage. The Scottish Links Championship Golf Course at Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club on the Chanonry Peninsula enjoys breathtaking views over the Moray Firth.

The famous North Coast 500 driving route, known as "Scotland's Route 66," runs through Muir of Ord, just 9 miles away. This 500-mile circular route begins in Inverness and winds its way through six regions: Inverness-shire, Black Isle, Caithness, Sutherland, Easter Ross, and Wester Ross.

As it follows the coastline, the route incorporates steep mountain passes, single-track roads, and twisting bends. Along the journey, you'll encounter challenging blind corners and hairpin bends, all while taking in some of the most breathtaking scenery Scotland has to offer.
