Overview

A single-track road leads to Katie’s Cottage, which stands in glorious isolation, surrounded by rolling hills as far as the eye can see. This breathtaking landscape is home to ptarmigan, mountain hares, snow buntings, and golden eagles, making it the perfect retreat for nature lovers and those looking to truly escape.

The cottage retains its traditional two-up, two-down layout, with the front door opening into a white, wood-panelled hallway leading to the main living spaces. The sitting room is warm and inviting, with an elegant Victorian fireplace at its heart, the colour of which has been beautifully echoed in the stylish soft furnishings. Across the hallway, the large dining kitchen is bright and airy, featuring quality wood flooring, a woodburning stove, and additional comfortable seating. Fully equipped with modern conveniences, it includes an electric cooker, fridge (with a chest freezer in an outdoor shed), microwave, dishwasher, and even a second television.

A thoughtfully redesigned outbuilding houses the bathroom, complete with a large bath and overhead shower, as well as a utility room with a washing machine.

Upstairs, the two bedrooms — one twin and one double — are tucked under the eaves, with coombed ceilings and quaint multi-paned sash windows overlooking the valley. The whole cottage has been lovingly restored with no sacrifice of its intrinsic charm, and guests often remark on its cosy, welcoming atmosphere year-round.

Outside, the croft’s former farmland is now a spacious grassy garden, open on one side. While the single-track road sees very little traffic, care should still be taken with children and dogs. Beyond the cottage, the road winds further up the glen before ending, ensuring peace, seclusion, and only the occasional passing sheep or deer.

Katie’s Cottage offers a rare opportunity to experience the beauty of the Highlands in a home that blends tradition with modern comfort, making it an ideal retreat for those looking to unwind in a truly special setting.

The Falls of Shin (20 miles) also make for a great stop, especially for those hoping to glimpse leaping salmon.

Mountain bikers can challenge themselves on the Kyle of Sutherland Trails at Carbisdale (11 miles), considered among the UK’s best, with technical rock slabs, fast descents, and stunning views of the private Carbisdale Castle. For hillwalkers, the area offers both Grahams, such as Carn a’ Choin Deirg near Ardgay, and Munros like Ben Wyvis (47 miles).

In this sublimely peaceful setting, you can escape from everyday cares. Whether you spend your days tackling the great outdoors or simply unwinding in comfort, Katie’s Cottage provides a cosy haven to return to, with its fascinating wildlife, breathtaking landscape, and ever-changing skies—ensuring there’s always another adventure waiting tomorrow.
