Overview

Once home to the Sutherland Estate’s gamekeepers and their families, this two-bedroom cottage seamlessly blends traditional character with modern comforts. Features such as crow-stepped gables, flagstone kitchen floors, and a cosy woodburning stove are complemented by WiFi, central heating, and touches of farmhouse chic throughout.

The spacious kitchen/diner is thoughtfully equipped with a freezer, dishwasher, and a nearby WC for convenience. Large patio doors lead to a delightful addition – a covered sitooterie! Perfect in any weather, this sheltered patio invites guests to relax, soak in the tranquil atmosphere, and enjoy the expansive skies of the North Highlands. Quiet moments here may reward you with sightings of ospreys, red deer, otters, or even nocturnal visitors like owls, bats, and the elusive Northern Lights.

The cosy sitting room is filled with natural light from its two windows, offering views across the communal Green and towards the wooded hills of Sutherland Estate. Gather around the woodburning stove with a dram from the nearby Glenmorangie Distillery as you plan your next adventure.

Upstairs, the cottage sleeps four across two tastefully furnished bedrooms, tucked under the eaves. The twin bedroom features a charming sash window with countryside views, while the double bedroom, with its Velux® windows, offers the chance to stargaze from the comfort of the luxurious double bed. A modern family bathroom completes the upstairs layout.

Outside, parking is conveniently located at the door, and Dunrobin Farm Green provides ample space for children to play, dogs to roam, and picnics to be enjoyed. Take a moment to sit beneath the weeping willow on the Green and admire the scenery.

Kennels Cottage is a delightful base for exploring the wonders of the North Highlands, whether you’re discovering the historic charm of Dunrobin Castle, wandering along Golspie’s sandy shores, or venturing into the breathtaking countryside that surrounds this enchanting property.

Map & Local

The directions to Kennels Cottage perfectly reflect its location: "Turn right after Dunrobin Castle."

Dunrobin Castle, known as "The Fairytale Castle," with its spires and stunning gardens, is less than half a mile from Kennels Cottage. Open to visitors from 1 April to 31 October, it can also be admired from vantage points along the Moray Firth coastline. The castle’s own railway station, a short walk from the cottage (approx 200 meters), offers an alternative travel option for guests.

Kennels Cottage is 1.5 miles from Golspie, a picturesque village on the North Coast 500. With the sea at its doorstep and Sutherland’s hills, forests, and mountains in the background, Golspie is perfect for outdoor adventures. The village offers a railway station, shops, cafés, a swimming pool, and an award-winning beach ideal for sandcastle building, wild swimming, or paddleboarding. Watersports equipment is available for hire in Brora, 5 miles away.

Hillwalking enthusiasts can enjoy routes such as Ben Bhraggie, the 1,302-foot hill overlooking Golspie. A path winds to the summit, offering breathtaking views and the striking 100-foot statue of the first Duke of Sutherland, locally known as "The Mannie."

Nearby, The Big Burn offers a scenic 1.75-mile walk starting minutes from Kennels Cottage. Alternatively, stroll 7 miles along the shore to Brora and catch the train back. For wildlife enthusiasts, Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve (2.8 miles) is a haven for ospreys, seals, otters, and other species.

Mountain bikers will love Golspie’s Highland Wildcat Trails, including the infamous Black Trail, the UK’s longest downhill route. Golfers can enjoy Golspie Golf Course, Brora Golf Club, or Royal Dornoch’s Championship course, just 10 miles away.

Further afield, John O’Groats, at the UK’s northern tip, is a 90-minute drive. Visit the iconic signpost and take the ferry to Orkney for a memorable day out.

Alternatively, head south to Loch Glass (30 miles) and its Instagram-famous Pink House, or explore Portmahomack (26 miles), an ancient fishing village with a sandy beach, historic harbour, and frequent dolphin sightings.

Inverness, the Highland capital, is 59 miles away, offering theatres, cinemas, excellent restaurants, shops, and the chance to visit Loch Ness and its mythical monster.
