Scenically like a little bit of The Highlands in The Lowlands there are glens with native woodlands laced with quiet footpaths which tenants can wander at will and the River Whiteadder offers private salmon and trout fishing (permits available by prior arrangement) as it meanders past the house or rushes through the glen.
The Retreat has been completely refurbished within its old stone walls. It is an elegant home affording maximum comfort and a charming ambience, and it faces across a courtyard to the grassy banks of the River Whiteadder and the trees beyond. It is semi-detached (at right-angles) from a stone barn with the owner's house situated on the other side of the adjacent stream.
The interior affords a taste of gracious, traditional country living on a manageable scale. The sitting room has rather the feel of a drawing room, being spacious and comfortably furnished, with a traditional fireplace and lovely open fire. This colour scheme is continued in the neatly designed and spacious dining kitchen, which is brightly lit and very appealing.
Upstairs are two bedrooms, a double and a twin, and both of which are attractively presented, with plenty of room. The double room has en suite facilities and there is even enough space for an additional single bed alongside the double without any sense of being cramped. There is also a shower room and a separate WC.
Outside, there is a large grass meadow leading to a pond that is very picturesque, but some care may be required with young children. The River Whitadder lies beyond with open hills on the other side of the river.
There is horse riding, bird watching and scuba-diving at famous St Abb's Head, golf on many courses; an Adventure Driving School and a fine sandy beach at Coldingham Bay nearby - plus an excellent small restaurant for both snacks and meals.
The Southern Upland Way runs close to the cottage on its way to the sea at Cockburnspath and joining it for the final stage makes a great day’s walking. There is more of the same on offer to the north in the Lammermuir Hills. In this direction too, golfers will find almost too much choice among the superb courses on the coast, Dirleton, Gullane, Luffness and even Muirfield itself. There is historical interest too, in the form of Dirleton and Tantallon Castles, near North Berwick.
North Berwick is a popular holiday resort and features the Scottish Seabird Centre, where visitors can see, live on camera, the amazing seabird colonies on the Bass Rock just offshore or take a boat trip out to the Rock to see it all first hand. Just a little inland is the Museum of Flight (aircraft this time, not birds) at East Fortune.
Edinburgh is just over one hour's drive and with all of the Scottish Border country, plus Northumberland's National Park, coast and castles within easy radius, there is almost too great a choice of places to visit!
