Riddell House is a magnificent mid-19th century heritage house in a wonderful country setting near the village of Lilliesleaf (2 miles) amidst the stunning scenery of the picturesque Scottish Borders.
The house has been extended and modernised to create a spacious and chic holiday home. Guests are welcomed into a delightful hallway that hints at the elegance yet to come. An open fire crackles away enticingly at the heart of the grand drawing room. Double doors lead into the adjacent dining room which provides space for everyone to savour meals together. Doors from the dining room open out into the garden and outdoor seating on a pretty terrace.
A cosy TV room provides a further hideaway leading onto a south-facing terrace. In the kitchen the huge electric range is a joy to cook on and there is a useful island with seating. The attractive downstairs twin bedroom, with its large feature window, TV and tea making facilities is ideal for people with mobility issues. This room leads into a spacious en suite wet room with luxurious underfloor heating.
Each of the four delightful double bedrooms upstairs has been presented with its own stylish colour scheme with the added benefit of their own TVs and deluxe en suite bathrooms. A range of additional services from cleaning, laundry and catering are available on request.
The south-facing garden is enclosed by hedges with an archway that leads through to a full-size tennis court that guests have exclusive use of. A heated drying room is provided outside which is great for drying wet coats and jackets, wellies, etc after days spent out exploring. The dark skies also allow for the amazing stars above to be admired.
An additional enclosed lawn area just across the lane is also available which is the perfect place to enjoy a game of football or croquet or simply allow the dog or the children to run and play.
The owners live alongside but they have their own parking area and do not overlook the house, so they are on hand for any queries but are very respectful of guests' privacy and are happy to leave them to enjoy the peace and quiet.
Conservation is of particular importance to the Riddell Estate. Over 50 acres of special habitat have been created to help the resident wildlife thrive. On travels around the estate the Riddell Tower (the General’s Tower) can be seen standing at an impressive 82 feet high. Parts of it date right back to the 14th century and it has undergone extensive renovations over the years.
As the estate is situated at the heart of the Ale Water Valley there are numerous lovely walking and cycling routes crossing the area with miles of hills and woodland to explore. In addition there are many outdoor activities available in the valley.
The Clerklands Fishery just a mile along the road has a huge 4 acre loch for fly fishing against a beautiful backdrop. If horse riding is on the agenda the Ian Stark Equestrian Centre (2 miles) is just the place with tuition and scenic hacking on offer or, have a go at clay pigeon shooting at nearby Bisley at Braidwood (4 miles).
18 holes of golf can be played at the Woll Golf Course (4.5 miles) where the excellent restaurant can be tried out for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Melrose (9.5 miles) is a pretty town centred around a historic 12th century abbey with lots to attract visitors. As well as having all the shops you could need there are some good pubs and eateries too. The town has a rich history with the fascinating Trimontium Museum showcasing Roman artefacts and the site of a Roman fort visible just outside the town.
In St Boswells (8 miles) there are a couple of places to head for a meal and, during the day, its café/bookshop has a nice deli with some delicious treats to pick up. Further afield the train station at Tweedbank (10 miles) links up to Edinburgh so the centre of the city can be reached in under an hour.
