Tucked away half a mile off a quiet side road in the rolling Scottish Borders countryside is Hollybush Cottage, a charming, detached house set in a pretty garden, near the delightful town of Melrose (5.5 miles).
Once inside, the chic sitting room is beautifully presented in soothing tones with a wood-burning stove at its heart that adds to the welcoming ambience that can be felt immediately on arrival.
Evening meals can be enjoyed in the dining kitchen where the nominated cook has the choice of the traditional Aga or modern electric hob to cook on and concertina glass doors open all the way up onto the deck with its expansive, rural views. Hooks for coats, etc can be found in the useful utility/boot room that neatly houses the laundry facilities and leads through to a contemporary shower room with a large walk-in shower.
Stairs lead up to the two attractive double bedrooms that both enjoy pleasant views out over the surrounding fields and woodland. The rolltop bath in the upstairs bathroom is the perfect place for a relaxing, well-deserved soak after busy days spent out and about.
To the side of the house there is plenty of parking for up to 3 cars and secure storage is provided for bikes and other sporting equipment. Guests also have access to the tennis court in the owner's garden which is only a minutes' walk away.
There is so much beautiful countryside to explore around the cottage with walks leading off into most directions straight from the door and quiet roads that are ideal for cyclists. The Earlston Jubilee path passes by Redpath and can be linked up with the Leader Water Path to create a longer route of about 6 miles in total.
It is just 5 minutes’ drive to one of the most iconic views in the area. The outlook that is said to have been one of Sir Walter Scott’s favourites is named in his honour as Scott’s View and looks out over the sparkling waters of the River Tweed to the Eildon hills that dominate the skyline for miles around.
Melrose (5.5 miles) is a delight to wander around with a superb range of different shops and eateries to visit. The River Tweed runs through the town with lovely walks to be had along its banks with wildlife to look out for along the way and permits available for salmon fishing on various local beats.
The town has strong Roman connections with the Trimontium Museum displaying an array of interesting artefacts that were found around the nearby Roman fort complex. Melrose is also home to an impressive 12th century abbey that is one of four in the surrounding area that make a fascinating tour for history enthusiasts.
It is an easy, 45 minute drive up to the capital Edinburgh for a sightseeing day trip, which is an absolute must for the holiday agenda. During the month of August every year the Edinburgh Fringe Festival attracts visitors from far and wide to experience its impressive programme of comedy, theatre and music as well as the ever-entertaining street performers.
