Those looking for a break away from it all will find the peace and tranquillity they are searching for at Gardener’s Cottage, set in its own charming gardens on the rural Elliston Estate near Melrose (5.5 miles) in the beautiful Scottish Borders.
Its inviting sitting room is the perfect place to disconnect from technology and enjoy spending time together, although there is WiFi for those that can’t quite resist a quick peep at their emails or social media. The dining room is very spacious and bright and the cottage has a convenient layout with the neat and well-equipped kitchen lying just off it. Meals are made into more of an occasion as everyone can gather round the table swapping stories and sharing memories.
In the handy downstairs bathroom there is the added benefit of both a walk-in shower and a bath to luxuriate in after busy days spent outdoors, with oil central heating that keeps everything nice and cosy. Both of the double bedrooms upstairs have king-size beds to stretch out on (that can be converted to twin beds if preferred) and lovely views out over the attractive garden.
There is parking for up to 3 cars and, if a good run around is needed to burn off some energy after a long car journey, children and pets can let loose in the garden. They are sure to love making the very most of the huge lawn and mature trees in the wonderful walled garden area that is great for hide and seek.
Beyond the garden, the estate itself is very pretty with an idyllic loch at its heart with swans gliding along serenely and sheep grazing lazily in the field. Additional guests can be accommodated by booking Gardener’s sister properties Byreman’s Cottage (sleeping 6) or Coachman's Cottage (sleeping up to 8) only a couple of minutes’ walk away.
Several different walking routes can be tackled with the choice of trying parts of St Cuthbert’s Way that goes from Melrose (5.5 miles) over to Holy Island off the Berwickshire coast, or the Southern Upland Way that stretches across the whole country, to name but two of the most popular.
Head into Melrose for a wander around this very picturesque town that has plenty of shops and also a fascinating history. The Trimontium Museum on the town square tells the story of the nearby Iron Age Roman settlement and houses an array of artefacts from the site, with weekly guided walks that run right out to it.
For adventures on two wheels, the quiet surrounding roads allow cyclists to explore the countryside easily. Mountain biking trails are dotted all around the area and the nearby trail that loops around the Eildon hills is a particular favourite. There is also the chance to visit the two excellent 7stanes mountain biking centres at Innerleithen (20 miles) and Glentress (26 miles).
Kelso (12.5 miles) has a whole host of attractions with a stunning 18th century castle set in gorgeous grounds, a race course with a programme of meets throughout the year, a picturesque 18-hole golf course to perfect the swing on and a range of interesting little shops, pubs and eateries.
Of course, being so close to Scotland’s amazing capital city it would be a real shame not to fit in a day trip up to do some shopping or see some of its many historic sights. Edinburgh Castle is sure to be at the top of the list, along with the huge Scott’s Monument (with 287 internal steps leading up it for stunning views of the city) and the chance to see the fine pieces on display at the Scottish National Gallery.
