Picturesque River Cottage in the south west of Scotland has a delightfully rural location in the Dumfriesshire hills, 5 miles north of Lockerbie.

The cottage is reached by about a quarter of a mile of lane from the quiet B723 country road leading to Eskdalemuir.
Inside the living area is snug and cosy with a welcoming atmosphere and a multi-fuel stove as an attractive focal point. There is plenty of comfortable seating to relax on and an arch from the sitting room leads to a separate dining area with a fascinating corner piece.
The kitchen is neat and well-equipped and all on the one level are the spacious double bedroom and shower room. There is also a large, handy conservatory porch which is perfect for storing muddy boots or fishing tackle after a day spent out exploring the countryside.
Outside the cottage sits in a mature, enclosed garden (with furniture) with an open terrace that is just 50 metres away from the Dryfe Water. River Cottage is ideal for two people seeking a quiet retreat for a relaxing holiday.
There are riverside walks from the cottage and a licence for fishing is obtainable at Loch Maben post office.
A variety of eating places, shops and an ice rink (in season) can be found at Lockerbie and just outside the town is the Pan-Am Memorial Chapel at Tundergarth. The pretty town of Moffat is just 20 minutes up the road, while Dumfries is 15 miles and the busy, historic Border town of Carlisle is half an hour's drive south. The Solway coast, with sandy beaches and the delightfully named attractions of Caerlaverock Castle and Sweetheart Abbey, can be reached within the hour, while the A74 (M) from nearby Lockerbie provides rapid access to both the North and the South.
Those considering a Gretna Green wedding will be interested to know that the cottage is just 20 minutes away from there and would make an ideal honeymoon location!
Active guests will find plenty to do here. The 7stanes mountain biking trails have been developed in the area, the nearest just beyond Dumfries in the forest of Ae, with another at Dalbeattie. Dumfries has several riding establishments as well as leisure centres and all facilities. There are seemingly endless sandy beaches at Southerness, while to the north a visit to picturesque Wanlockhead, Scotland’s highest village and once a lead mining centre but now as rural as can be, is another worthwhile experience.
