Situated just off a quiet country road, there is no shortage of parking at the rear of the house. The main entrance is at the front, through a wooden porch that leads to a spacious hallway. Here, the quality that features throughout the property is immediately obvious, with polished hardwood floors, fine rugs and comfortable furnishings.
The scale of the house can be measured by the fact it boasts three reception rooms. The largest of them features two large sofas, a bay window and a television with Sky TV and a dvd player. One of the others has a piano, while the third offers a large selection of jigsaws and board games. So if the kids want to get away from the grown-ups – or vice versa – there is no shortage of options available.
The heart of the house is the impressive dining room, where the adults and children can get together again around a spectacular, 16-seat table. Just as well that the property has two kitchens to service all those hungry mouths. The main one, adjacent to the dining room, has two large electric cookers and the usual range of appliances, while the smaller, secondary kitchen is in a wing of the house that could be used as an annexe if required.
That part of the property also features a downstairs twin bedroom and a WC/shower room that is ideal for those with mobility issues. Upstairs, there are another six bedrooms: two king size (one with an additional single bed), two double and two twin. Some of the rooms have wash-hand basins and all have lovely views over the gardens. Three family bathrooms complete the upstairs accommodation.
The landscaped garden grounds, chiefly set to lawns and mature shrubs, are truly spectacular, perfect for games and leisurely strolls. Children will love the corner of the garden that has a trampoline and a swing/climbing frame. There is a large outdoor table which is ideal for al-fresco dining when the weather allows. The River Esk, one of Scotland’s (and, for its last few miles, England’s) great salmon rivers flows past the property at the bottom of the garden.
The young – and young at heart – will love the large garage building that has been converted into a games room, featuring a pool table and table tennis. The building also houses two substantial barbecues which are sure to prove popular with guests of all ages. A washing machine and drier can also be found here.
While Westerkirk Mains has a refreshing ‘off the beaten track’ feel, it is actually within easy reach of many population centres: Carlisle, 25 miles, Glasgow, 80 miles; Edinburgh, 67 miles, Newcastle, 75 miles. The M6/M74 motorway passes 15 miles to the west – an added convenience for those coming from further afield.
The nearest settlement is the tiny village of Bentpath (2 miles). There are no shops here, but it is home to the oldest lending library still operating in Scotland. Bentpath also features a memorial to Thomas Telford, the great engineer of the industrial revolution, who was born at Glendinning Farm, about three miles further up the valley from Westerkirk Mains.
Langholm (7 miles) is the main town in the area. Known locally (if ironically) as the ‘Muckle Toon’. Langholm was once famed for the high quality textiles its mills produced. The mills have gone now, but the town is still a busy local centre, with a range of shops, a swimming pool and leisure centre, pubs and hotels. The traditional seat of the Clan Armstrong, in 1972 Langholm was visited by Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, who was made a freeman of the burgh.
Moving further afield, there is a large supermarket in Lockerbie (17 miles) and many more shopping opportunities and outlets in Dumfries (29 miles) and Carlisle (25 miles). History buffs will love the many castles and fortified houses in the area, none more spectacular than the magnificently forbidding Hermitage Castle (16 miles), where Mary Queen of Scots famously visited her lover, Lord Bothwell.
A more recent creation is the Samye Ling Tibetan Buddhist Centre at Eskdalemuir (9 miles) which was set up in the 1960s by Tibetan monks who had fled to the west after China took over their homeland. There is no charge for visiting Samye Ling, which has a shop and tearoom (although opening hours are limited through winter).
Those seeking a physical rather than spiritual experience can walk freely in the hills around Westerkirk Mains. The well-named Great Hill, which rises to almost 1500ft to the north-east of the house, offers a bracing challenge and spectacular views. Cyclists will relish the network of quiet roads around the house, while mountain bikers will love the marked trails through Castle O’er Forest and the Forest of Ae. Innerleithen, Scotland’s leading mountain biking centre, is just 20 miles away.
