Wanton Wa's is a beautiful, traditional stone cottage located at Nine Mile Burn, just outside Penicuik (5 miles) and a short drive from Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh (15 miles). Here you can have the best of both worlds, a cosy country retreat in a scenic setting, with easy access to Edinburgh.
Access the property via a short drive off the main road. Follow a charming country lane, and you'll soon be greeted by Wanton Wa's, a beautiful stone cottage, built in the early 1800s, and fully renovated in 2022-3 to immaculate condition.
Step inside to a spacious hallway. A bookcase overflowing with books and maps invites exploration of the local area and beyond. A tartan carpet adds a touch of quirky charm to this welcoming space.
The cosy, country cottage-style living room beckons you in with an open fire, perfect for those relaxing evenings. Curl up on the sofa and admire the rolling hills of the Edinburgh greenbelt stretching out before you.
From here you can step down into the large country kitchen, complete with a Belfast sink with a view. This fully equipped kitchen features everything you need for your self-catering holiday including an integrated fridge/freezer, oven and hob, dishwasher and Nespresso coffee machine. A large kitchen table takes centre stage, perfect for family meals and social gatherings.
The kitchen leads to a lovely bright sunroom that looks out onto the charming, secluded garden, complete with picnic table and bench set, ideal for alfresco dining in a serene and peaceful countryside setting. The conservatory also features a card table, and a selection of games and puzzles to keep you entertained of an evening.
Wanton Wa’s comfortably sleeps up to 6 guests, with 3 stylishly designed bedrooms. There is a master bedroom with a double bed and a cushioned window seat overlooking the beautiful countryside. Next to the double bedroom, you will find a twin room, and next to that a cosy bunk room (with adult sized bunks), perfect for kids or groups of friends getting together.
You will also find a separate bathroom and shower room, each with a WC for added choice and convenience. There is plenty of storage throughout the cottage, helping to make yourself at home for the duration of your stay. There is also a utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer, with access to the back garden.
The cottage is all on one level, but has front door steps, and two small sets of internal steps (to the kitchen, and bathroom/utility room area), all with handrails for added convenience and safety.
Outside you will find a beautifully maintained, enclosed garden which offers peaceful seclusion and privacy. There is ample parking for up to 3 cars close to the cottage, making it ideal for groups and family gatherings.
Please note that two burns are flowing in the cottage grounds, with little bridges crossing them. Children will delight in playing and exploring in the beautiful gardens, but care should be taken with children and pets to ensure their safety around the streams.
Wanton Wa’s is the perfect base for exploring the city of Edinburgh, with public transport options including park and ride. If you enjoy the great outdoors, you are perfectly placed to explore the picturesque Midlothian region. There are plenty of walking options from Patie’s Hill right on your doorstep, to the range of options in the beautiful Pentland Hills.
Wanton Wa’s in Nine Mile Burn is in the perfect location to give you the best of both worlds, a peaceful and charming country retreat in beautiful surroundings, but with easy access to the city of Edinburgh and all it has to offer.
If you are looking to stock up on supplies or eat out, Penicuik is only 5 miles away and has a selection of supermarkets, shops, cafes, takeaways and eateries. West Linton (3.5 miles) is a picturesque conservation village well worth a visit. Here you can get basic grocery supplies, they also have a small selection of cafes and restaurants and a monthly community market.
In Edinburgh (15 miles), there is a huge range of options for shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. The city hosts a wide range of visitor attractions including Edinburgh Castle, Princess Street Gardens, The National Galleries of Scotland and the National Museum of Scotland to name but a few. Edinburgh is around 30 minutes away by car, or you can travel by bus.
To the south, you have the picturesque Scottish Borders to explore. With countless options for walking and mountain biking, riding and exploring a host of historical Scottish towns and villages, castles and abbeys.
If you enjoy walking, you will be spoiled for choice in the local area from a walk around Patie’s Hill on your doorstep to the wider playground of the Pentland Hills just 5 miles away, where there is an excellent choice of routes of varying difficulty, so there is something for everyone.
You are just 8 miles away from the dry ski slopes at Hillend Snowsports Centre, on the edge of the Pentlands. Here you can enjoy the view from the chairlift before taking to the slopes. If you prefer to travel downhill on a mountain bike, there are a range of mountain biking trails in the Pentland Hills to explore.
If you are a golfer, there are some excellent courses in the local area to choose from such as the picturesque West Linton Golf Course (4.5 miles) or Glencorse Golf Club (7 miles). There are many golf clubs to choose from in Edinburgh such as Braid Hills Golf Course (11 miles) or Duddingston Golf Club (15 miles) in the shadow of the famous Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano that stands proudly in the centre of Edinburgh.
For those who enjoy fishing the local area offers reservoirs where you can arrange a day ticket for trout fishing. The closest are Glencorse Reservoir (7 miles) and Loganlea Reservoir (9 miles).
