Smithy Cottage is idyllically situated by the water in the tiny Argyllshire village of Bellanoch, which is at the western end of the Crinan Canal and is a sailor's paradise. A whitewashed, traditional, stone-built cottage, it features prominently on postcards from the area.
Inside, it is no less of a delight. Its owner bought it as her dream home and in consequence has spared no effort in its refurbishment. Now lucky holiday makers also have the opportunity to enjoy the results. The cosy living room has comfortable seating around its wood-burning stove that is perfect for cuddling up in front of after a day out and about. There is also a charming little window seat and a spacious dining table at the back of the room with plenty of room for convivial evening meals.
The beautifully fitted kitchen is modern and well-equipped, with a lovely slate floor and an Aga-style cooker. It is supplemented by a utility room in an outbuilding that houses the laundry facilities and is very handy for storing wet clothes and muddy boots.
Upstairs there are two good bedrooms, a double and a twin, that are reached by a steep staircase (care to be taken with children). They are both pleasantly presented and continue the house’s nautical theme that is entirely appropriate with the house being so close to the water and the marina. The twin room even has amazing rustic driftwood headboards on the beds. A modern, tiled shower room completes the indoor accommodation.
Outside, to the rear, is a charming and enclosed garden that is surrounded by trees. To the front there is the little road (leading only to Crinan Harbour), a small expanse of grass and then the water! There is also a small burn in the garden (care to be taken with children) and a boat launch just around the corner, if you wish to bring your own craft.
The forestry area behind the house offers great opportunities for walking, while the Crinan Hotel and coffee shop is barely half a mile away.
From there you can take the Sea Leopard out to see the spectacular whirlpool at Corryvreckan, off the northern tip of the Isle of Jura.
Tayvallich, which is on the way down to Ulva and is another famous sailing centre, has a PO, while Lochgilphead (3 miles) has shops, restaurants and a leisure centre. Excellent boat trips can also be had from Craobh Haven which you will reach from Lochgilphead by way of the historic Kilmartin Glen, with its 5,000 year old cairns, stone circles and carvings.
The area also is part of the Heritage Wetlands Trust and is a World Heritage Centre for wildlife, in particular wetland birds. Another date for your diary has to be the Wooden Boat Festival at Crinan in July.
Garden enthusiasts will find that the Arduaine Gardens are within a few miles, or, from further down the peninsula at Tayinloan you can take the boat over to visit the gardens on the Isle of Gigha. Further afield, you can explore the length of the Kintyre peninsula or head north to Oban.
