With the charming town of Lochgilphead easily accessible only a 5 minute drive away and the loch literally a stone’s throw away at the end of the garden, this charming cottage, which has been recently refurbished throughout, really has it all. The sitting room’s wood-burning stove makes relaxation easy on arrival and comfortable seating opposite the French doors allows the view to be fully appreciated. As the sitting/dining room/kitchen is open plan, everyone can either gather together or separate off and have their own space.
The handy en suite downstairs double bedroom is great for anyone in the party who may struggle with stairs and the other double bedroom upstairs has a lovely, super king-size, wooden sleigh bed to spread out on. There is also a bright twin room on this level with a bathroom in between with a bath for a soak or a shower over. Any furry friends are well catered for at Pier Cottage with a comfy dog bed, dog bowls and towels provided for drying them off after walkies.
Guests can take advantage of the thoughtfully placed beachside gazebo which creates a wonderful sanctuary from which to savour a morning coffee or enjoy meals whilst also soaking up those wonderful views. The water is just beyond the garden wall (with direct access to the shore) and watching the tide coming in and going out again is very soothing.
It is great fun to wildlife-spot from the smart terrace as seals can often be seen sunning themselves out in the loch. A selection of nature books are provided in the cottage which can help identify different species, and binoculars allow for a close-up look.
Pier’s sister property, Shore Cottage, is just 100/150 metres away so it is ideal for larger parties who want to holiday together.
Wildlife is in abundance here with the chance to see cheeky wee red squirrels, otters, deer and pine martens as well as an amazing array of birdlife including herons, buzzards, curlews, oyster catchers and even sea eagles.
The nearest town is Lochgilphead (3 miles) where shops, pubs and eateries can all be found, although grocery deliveries to the house can be arranged. There is also an 18 hole golf course for a few rounds and a community swimming pool.
Ardrishaig (5 miles) sits at the starting point of the wonderful Crinan canal, known as Britain’s ‘most beautiful short cut’ that crosses the Kintyre peninsula. The flat towpath makes it ideal for an enjoyable bike ride along the banks or a picnic whilst taking in the boats and yachts navigating the locks.
At Knapdale Forest (9.5 miles) the Scottish Beaver Trial is situated - these fascinating mammals were reintroduced to Scotland back in 2009 having been brought over from Norway to repopulate the area. They are usually most active at dusk but even if the beavers aren’t spotted there is evidence of them all around with dams they have built and tree bark that they’ve had a good gnaw on.
Oban (40 miles) is a hub for various ferry services those that want to explore some of the islands such as Mull or Lismore for interesting day trips.
