Tucked away in an idyllic spot down a private drive is Ardtur Cottage, a country retreat with attractive gardens looking out over the pretty surrounding woodland, just half a mile from the village of Port Appin in Argyll.

The original old croft has been cleverly extended to create a very spacious, comfortable house all on one level with plenty of scope for everyone to have their own space when required. Guests are welcomed on entry by the bright sunroom that is a great place to relax with a book and enjoy sunny views out over the garden.
A light and airy feel prevails in the main open plan sitting/dining room that benefits from large windows and lovely high ceilings. This sociable room is perfect for unwinding after busy days of exploring and tucking into a hearty meal together whilst having a good old catch-up. The well-equipped kitchen has a delightful outlook over the garden to both the front and back and has a handy little breakfasting area.
A walk-through twin bedroom by the sitting room leads through to an attractive double bedroom that it shares a small shower room with. Offering extra privacy right at the other end of the house is the spacious master double bedroom with a luxurious king-size bed and French doors showing off the garden, as well as a contemporary bathroom just adjacent.
Plenty of room for parking is provided in the gravelled driveway and the enclosed, south-facing garden has a couple of different seating areas to eat at or enjoy the pretty surroundings from. Birds can be seen and heard chirping away in the garden and deer can often be spotted passing close by.
A wonderful sandy beach can be found just 5 minutes’ walk away and it is often completely deserted! Port Appin (0.5 miles) has a well-stocked community store and there is a large supermarket for further supplies in Oban (19 miles) just half an hour’s drive away.
One of the most iconic sights in the area is the impressive Castle Stalker (3 miles) out in Loch Laich, that empties into Loch Linnhe, so a visit is sure to be one of the first things on the agenda. There are great views of the castle to be admired from the loch shore or tours are available via a short boat ride.
It is possible to horse ride along the loch shore from Lettershuna Riding Centre (4 miles) and head around the castle’s rocky islet when the tides are right (Loch Linnhe is a sea loch). A splendid experience that is certainly one for the books!
A day trip over to the beautiful Isle of Lismore is easily achievable from Port Appin. The ferry crossing only takes 10 minutes and, although it is a passenger ferry, bikes can be taken over (there is also bike hire on the island) which is a good way of seeing as much of the island as possible. The Gaelic Heritage Centre is worth stopping at to see the fascinating restored croft house demonstrating how the islanders used to live.
If some of the scenery used in the James Bond film Skyfall appeals, it is only around half an hour’s drive up the coastline to the stunning Glen Coe that was used as one of the filming locations. The Glencoe Mountain Resort (31 miles) is the place to head for snowsports in season.
