The cottage is set near the head of Loch Stornoway, a branch of West Loch Tarbert, and is accessed via a private drive off a quiet, scenic road looping around much of the peninsula. Clad in larch, the property blends beautifully with its woodland surroundings, while a delightful tumbling stream borders the grounds on one side (extra care should be taken with young children).
Built with energy efficiency and accessibility in mind, Ard Darach offers two versatile bedrooms configured as twin or super king-size rooms, an open-plan kitchen/living area, and paved patios ideal for al fresco dining.
The main entrance opens into a bright hallway with a tiled floor, ample cupboard space (including a washing machine), and convenient hanging areas. This hallway also leads to a stylish WC/shower room with the same high-quality fittings found throughout the property.
The heart of the house is the magnificent and huge (over 500 sq ft) kitchen/living room. With windows on three sides, this is a wonderfully bright and airy space, which also benefits from the presence of a wood burning stove for chillier days and nights.
The kitchen area is well equipped with extensive cupboard space, quality appliances and an island dining area, while the seating area has a smart TV and two comfortable sofas. There is additional seating in the window alcoves – ideal for watching the local wildlife. Outside, facing south-west, there is a dining/picnic table that is just the place (when the weather is being kind) for evening meals.
A second hallway gives access to the two bedrooms and a family shower room. One of the bedrooms has its own en-suite shower/WC, while both have French doors that lead out to an east-facing terrace that is the perfect breakfasting spot on sunnier days. Again, the sense of quality is enhanced by hardwood flooring throughout most of the house, A charming mixture of old and new furniture accentuates the character of the place.
Ard Darach has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate guests with mobility needs. The single-storey layout, ramped main entrance, wheelchair-friendly interiors, and a wet room ensure accessibility and convenience throughout the property.
Of all Scotland’s hidden corners and best-kept secrets, the Knapdale peninsula has to be one of the finest. Yet for all its peace and sense of solitude, Ard Darach is within easy reach of Tarbert (10m), a bustling ferry port and sailing centre, which boasts a good range of shops and restaurants. Lochgilphead (23m) has more extensive shopping opportunities.
Nature lovers will relish the chance to explore such an abundant area. On the wildlife front, otters, deer and red squirrels are regular sightings, while beavers have recently been reintroduced at Loch Barnluasgan (26m). The Knapdale Beaver Trail is a woodland walk of about two hours based around the loch. If you are lucky you might just catch a glimpse of one of these elusive creatures; if not, there is a very good information centre at the site.
Given Argyll’s temperate climate, there are spectacular gardens within easy reach as well. Crarae (33m) is a National Trust for Scotland property 10 miles south of Inverary. A tranquil woodland garden with Himalayan plants and tumbling waterfalls, it also has a pleasant cafe and shop. Arduaine Gardens (38m) near Oban is an oasis of tranquillity in a dramatic setting, while Achamore Garden on the island of Gigha Gigha (the ferry departs from Tayinloan, 28m) is also worth a visit.
Gentle inclines and quiet roads have made Knapdale something of a destination for cyclists, too. Those who prefer to take their bikes off road will find plenty of opportunities in the many forest tracks in the vicinity. Walkers will love exploring the area, especially along a coastline that features some lovely secluded beaches. There is a nine-hole golf course at the head of West Loch Tarbert (9m), while Machrihanish (54m) near the southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre regularly features on lists of the world’s finest links.
If you don’t fancy cooking at the end of a strenuous day then you can satisfy your hunger at any one of a number of outlets in Tarbert. The Seabed Restaurant and Lulabelles have both earned positive reviews, while the award-winning Kilberry Inn (3m) is a true gem. For even more indulgence, and perhaps a little pampering, a 25-minute ferry from Tarbert will deliver you to Portavadie, a luxury resort where the pool and spa facilities are open to non-residents (best to book ahead).
Of course, doing nothing at all can be equally attractive. Ard Darach is perfect for those who just want to take a break from busy lives, breathe the clean air and maybe do a spot of stargazing on the bright, clear nights that bring the lazy days to such a perfect ending.
