Those looking for their perfect island getaway need look no further than Taigh Nan Eilean. This charming detached cottage occupies a beautiful spot right on the picturesque coastline and is a great base for exploring the magnificent outer Hebridean island of Lewis.
It is easy to settle into the slower pace of island life which makes a welcome change from the everyday hustle and bustle. The cosy cottage has been cleverly laid out to make the most of its incredible situation with the sea spread out before it. In the main living area floor to ceiling windows flood the room with natural light and perfectly frame the scene outside which guests may find it hard to tear themselves away from. A wood-burning stove keeps everything toasty and a sliding door pulls back to reveal the separate kitchen, which is supplemented by an additional utility room with laundry facilities.
Both of the bedrooms, a double and a twin, feature the famous Harris Tweed as a delightful reminder of the Hebridean setting. The double room has a handy en suite shower room and there is also a second shower room that is particularly suitable for those with mobility issues as it is fitted with hand grab rails and a shower seat.
Out on the raised deck the picnic seating offers the perfect vantage point from which to fully absorb the amazing view out towards the sea and the rugged mountains beyond it. Taigh Nan Eilean is set within its own enclosed garden amidst a 50 acre croft with beautiful Highland cattle often wandering in the field just next door.
Plenty of space is provided for parking multiple cars and, with three gorgeous beaches to choose from within easy walking distance, guests won’t have to wait long to feel the sand between their toes.
Please note: In order to ensure availability we recommend that guests book their ferry tickets over to Lewis with CalMac ferries at the same time as booking their accommodation.
Uig (3 miles) has a small but well-stocked community shop/petrol station for the essentials and fresh seafood is available direct from the source down at Miavaig pier (1.5 miles).
A great way of really taking in the island’s stunning scenery is to head out on one of Seatrek’s wildlife spotting boat trips that depart from the pier. They also offer fishing expeditions which is a good opportunity to try it for the first time as all of the gear is provided.
Lewis and Harris’ scenic coastline is dotted with spectacular beaches that wouldn’t look out of place in the Caribbean. The closest is Reef beach (known locally as Traigh na Beirigh) where the remarkable expanse of unspoilt white sand and sparkling water is particularly inviting and the machair is home to beautiful wildflowers and even orchids.
For a special meal out, Uig Sands Restaurant (3.5 miles) overlooking wonderful Uig Bay is well worth a visit with a menu featuring an amazing range of seafood and beautiful views to enjoy whilst dining.
As well as being a hub for ferries over from the mainland, Stornoway (32 miles) is the place to head to for supermarket shopping, a round of golf and a rummage around some of the interesting little shops. There is also bike hire available there for those who fancy exploring further on two wheels.
Please note: while we make every effort to be as accurate as possible, the actual position of the cottage indicated on the map above and the proximity of the amenities in the Local Info section cannot be guaranteed to be precise and should be used as a guide only.
