On the lovely Lochshiel Estate, some 45 miles west of Fort William, Camus Dorche is a relatively modern house built in traditional Scottish style which occupies a commanding position above the Shiel River and the Estate fishing pools.
For obvious reasons the house is particularly popular with those who come to shoot and fish, but will appeal to everyone who would enjoy relaxing in such comfortable Highland surroundings.
Most of the ground floor is given over to a huge open plan living area with various sitting areas and a wood-burning stove. On this level also is a double bedroom with en suite bathroom. Upstairs are two more bathrooms and three further bedrooms - a double (en suite) and two twin bedrooms.
With a drying room and separate utility area, the house is ideal for families who relish the outdoor life and an active holiday, as well as those who prefer to relax and take in the stunning local scenery.

Guests have access to splendid walks on the estate land, keeping a look out for the abundant wildlife in the area. Loch fishing can be arranged locally. There are also several sandy beaches to enjoy, the nearest about 2 miles from the cottage.
Acharacle (2 miles) offers shops and eating places while day trips via the ferries to Skye from Mallaig and Mull from Kilchoan are only some of a host of possibilities in this wonderful corner of Scotland.
No trip to this lovely part of the world would be complete without a trip to the Ardnamurchan peninsula, the westernmost point of mainland Britain. There is a Stevenson lighthouse right at the tip and the sands at Sanna Bay are justly famous. The road along there (turn right at Salen) is a delight in itself and en route you will pass the RSPB reserve at Glenborrodale, where in addition to wood warblers and redstarts you may also see otters and red squirrels.
To the north, the trip via Lochailort and 'The Road to the Isles' is equally rewarding, with the little port of Mallaig lying at the end of it. Prepare to be beguiled by the silver beaches and turquoise waters of Arisaig and Morar, with their wonderful views of Rum and Eigg, or even the links golf course there at Traigh, surely one of the most scenic in all Britain.

A perfect home from home with an added benefit of a drying room to take care to our outside gear when we were soaking from all piscatorial activities.
Enough space for everyone, roomy freezer, comfortable beds, lots of hot water.
It would have ben helpful if linen and towels were provided with the property they take up so much room in the cars at the expense of clothing to keep warm when fishing.
We know the area very well and enjoyed eating out in Arisaig at the Shellfish Shack once again and hiring a boat from John Macauley at Dalilea. Our grandson caught his first brownie on loch Shiel.

The house was well appointed, the kitchen well equipped and the beds comfortable. The living area is all open plan which suited our large group well. The drying room was handy for wet kit after a day outside, the showers were powerful and the hot water plentiful for our group of 7. The internet was stronger than we anticipated which was a pleasant surprise especially with 4 older teens.
One niggle would be the bathroom in the downstairs bedroom. Our older family member took that room as it was easier than tackling the stairs, it would have been preferable if an accessible shower had been available there. It was also rather inconvenient to have to take bedding and towels with us, in 20+ years of visiting Scotland cottages we haven’t ever needed to do that before and it really added to the luggage we had to bring.
The location is stunning and the views amazing, the little shop and hotel in Acharacle were lovely, there were deer in the garden at the hotel grazing while we sat with a drink watching. The beach around Castle Tioram was a great way to spend the day, only a short bike ride away and not too busy so the whole group enjoyed a paddle, even the dog!

Well equipped, large property in a great location with a good size garden. Would have been a 5 star review were it not for the absence of any soap or handwash in any of the bathrooms, which we thought a bit odd. Didn't affect our holiday though, we would certainly recommend the property and the area to any other visitors.
