Overview

Accessed via a scenic three-quarter-mile track (some care required) through ancient oak woodland, Fraon offers privacy and tranquillity, with only a few other neighbours in sight.

This modern detached house features a bright, spacious open-plan living area with a wood-burning stove, bespoke staircase, vaulted ceilings, and large cathedral-style windows. There is a choice of dining areas, a modern, well-equipped kitchen, and a cosy sitting area. The unique layout is perfect for cooking, entertaining, and spending quality time with family.

Glass doors lead to a sunroom with more comfortable seating, where you can take in the magnificence of your surroundings. Two sets of patio doors open onto a raised deck, ideal for outdoor dining with views of the Morvern Hills. Practicalities are not forgotten: the utility room and handy cloakroom at the back of the house provide direct access to the carport and driveway, with ample space to park three cars.

Upstairs, more spectacular views await from the large landing that leads to four good-sized bedrooms and a family bathroom. The master bedroom has a king-size bed and sliding doors to a cosy snug with a panoramic view of the countryside. A second double bedroom and two single rooms offer families plenty of space and flexibility.

Outside, the enclosed, grassy sloped garden offers a peaceful outdoor space that blends naturally with the landscape. Surrounded by heath and crofting land, sheep graze as the burn beyond the garden’s edge tumbles past. Wildlife lovers will enjoy spotting buzzards, eagles, pine martens, wildcats, red squirrels, and deer in the area, while seals and otters can often be seen along the lochside.

The woodland behind Fraon leads up the slopes of Ben Resipol, the highest peak on Ardnamurchan. On a clear day, those who reach the peak are rewarded with an awe-inspiring landscape, possibly even glimpsing Ben Nevis and the Isle of Skye. Set within a designated National Scenic Area, the location boasts dramatic coastal views, tranquil lochside woodlands, and rolling hills — making it an ideal holiday destination for anyone looking to escape the demands of everyday life and unwind in a peaceful, breathtaking natural setting. Fraon, true to its name, is indeed an idyllic place of shelter in the mountains.

Map & Local

This is a wonderful place just to relax, but for more energetic visitors, the surrounding hills offer great scope for walking. There are also several less challenging walks and picnic areas along the lochside.

There are beaches beyond Acharacle at Kentra, or, if you venture out to Ardnamurchan Point (the lighthouse is open to visitors and it is a prime whale-watching site) the westernmost tip of mainland Britain, there are particularly lovely sandy coves at nearby Sanna. From Acharacle you can take boat trips up Loch Shiel and regular ceilidh and wildlife cruises are also on offer.

The nearest village is Strontian (6m, with shops, pubs and PO) and from there you can also drive over the spectacular mountain road, past the Ariundle Nature Reserve, to the little settlement of Polloch on the shores of Loch Shiel.

For more serious shopping, leisure centres and an 18 hole golf course, it involves a trip to Fort William (29 miles via the Corran Ferry), where you can climb Ben Nevis (Britain's highest mountain), or enjoy the skiing at Aonach Mhor, where there is also a dry ski slope in summer.

Fraon is also an excellent centre for touring. If you go north along the Road to the Isles to Mallaig (42m) you will pass the glorious silver sands at Arisaig and Morar (there is an excellent golf course at Traigh) where you can take a trip to the small isles of Rum, Muck, Eigg or Canna. From Mallaig itself, the ferry plies back and forth to Armadale on Skye. To the south, from Lochaline (26m) you can hop across with your car to Fishnish on Mull (no booking necessary).
