The Old Post Office
Applecross, Wester Ross
Applecross is a magical place which once upon a time has no road access whatsoever - everything came in by sea. Now, however, you can drive there over the spectacular mountain Pass of the Cattle, or following the winding road round the southern shore of Loch Torridon, where some of the oldest mountains in the world plunge into the sea.

The heart of this idyllic village is the little row of cottages along the seashore, which have wonderful views across the Inner Sound to Raasay and Skye. One of these is the Old Post Office, which sits only a few yards from the pebble beach and sea, about half a mile south of sandy Applecross Bay and only a couple of minutes walk from the village's one and only pub (bar meals).
Next door to Tigh a Bhradan, this traditional old cottage has just been completely restored and refurbished by its new owners to a very high standard.
Cosy and comfortable, with modern electric heating, it is a delightful base for walking, exploring, or simply relaxing and watching the amazing seascape at your door, or from the little seating area (with furniture) across the wee road which is right on the sea front.
In summer, the lanes of Applecross are banked with wild orchids and iris that make a striking contrast to the bleak mountain scenery of the road in.
The village is a place to slow down and forget your everyday cares, with additional therapy provided by beach and coastal walks, or on more challenging routes in the surrounding hills.
There is a sandy beach at Applecross Bay with gorgeous views out to sea and tours with experienced guides that lead you around the fabulous coastline on sea kayaks (lessons available for beginners). There is rock climbing and abseiling to try as well, or perhaps even gorge walking in the nearby Toscaig gorge.
There is another beautiful long sandy beach at nearby Sand (3 miles) and there is a lovely walking route links it to Applecross Bay with some wonderful views across the Inner Sound to the isles of Skye and Raasay to take in along the way.
While in the area, a trip over the Bealach Na Ba mountain pass is an absolute must. With some tight hairpin bends and incredibly steep gradients it is certainly not for the faint hearted, although there is also an alternative coastal route that is much gentler and very scenic.
