The National Trust village of Plockton, a few miles north of the Skye Bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh, was built as a model village for the Scottish Highlands in the 1930s. With its palm-lined lochside street, it is surely one of the most picturesque villages in Scotland.

Overview

In a prime situation here, just across the narrow road from the loch is 7 Harbour Street, a charming traditional house built using the foundations and walls of a 150 year old cottage. It has now been fabulously extended and refurbished to create the most comfortable and stylish of holiday homes.

The front garden (with furniture) is across the road beside the shore and has wonderful views of Obanduaine Bay. To the rear is a large hillside terrace and pine garden, ideal for private barbecues, where you may also spot the pine martens and other forest creatures which live on the hill above.

The house is on three levels, with two twin bedrooms and a bathroom on the ground floor and an open plan dining kitchen and conservatory on a mezzanine level, where floor to ceiling glass windows open on to the alpine terrace garden at the back.

The living room and en suite master bedroom are on the floor above, again with wonderful views over the Bay (which you may well recognise from many paintings and calendar pages).

Map & Local

Plockton is blessed with some excellent little shops and, for a place so small, a dizzying array of excellent eating places. Sailors will know of its welcoming harbour, which offers boat and fishing trips as well as sea kayaking tuition.

The village has a well-stocked grocery shop and a lovely little waterfront gift shop with plenty of souvenirs to remind you of your stay when you return home.

Glass-bottomed boat trips run out from Kyle of Lochalsh (6 miles) from which you can admire the fascinating underwater marine life up close and perhaps even spot seals and otters resting on the rocks. You can also cross from Kyle of Lochalsh over the bridge to the wonderful Isle of Skye for a day trip, although with so much to see and do there, a day may not be quite sufficient!

Walkers and climbers will be spoilt for choice and there is a picturesque 9-hole golf course at Lochcarron. Plockton is also a splendid centre for exploring Torridon, the Applecross peninsula and places north, all of which offer some of the most dramatic and glorious scenery in the whole of Scotland.
