Overview

Letterfearn Cottage has a truly fabulous position right on the shore of Loch Duich with direct access to it, looking across to that most iconic of Scottish landmarks, Eilean Donan Castle. It is also a haven for wildlife with pine martens, red deer and otters to keep an eye out for.

For scenic beauty, peace and tranquillity, its setting could hardly be bettered. It is one of a small enclave of houses on an unclassified road leading to Totaig. This continues on an old drovers' road which passes a Broch and through a forest to Glenelg, perfect for forest walks and cycling. At the same time, it is just a few miles from the high road to Skye at Shiel Bridge.

From the outside, the cottage itself is a bit of a Cinderella. From the front you could be forgiven for thinking it is a typical whitewashed wee Highland But 'n' Ben. This simple exterior, however, conceals a wonderful extension at the back with patio doors just a few yards from the lochside, so that the views can be enjoyed in all weathers.

Inside, the cottage is comfortable and full of character and with two attractive sitting rooms guests will be spoilt for choice as to where to relax. The main sitting room is split level with the dining area and has plenty of comfortable seating, patio doors out to the garden and a wood-burning stove to keep it cosy. The second smaller sitting room has an electric stove and makes a great space for guests to spread out.

As well as the spacious dining area for more formal meals, the very well-appointed kitchen has stools at the breakfast bar for impromptu snacks. There is a separate utility room that houses some of the appliances, leaving plenty of room in the kitchen for food storage and preparation.

All on one level, there are two bedrooms, a double (with king-size bed) and a twin, both of which are most elegantly furnished, with neat blinds at the windows. The bathroom has a bath and separate shower, though there is a hand shower in the bath as well.

The cottage is also well-insulated and fully double-glazed. It is hard to think of anything more you could wish for and harder still to think of any party to whom such a superb holiday home would not appeal.

Outside the pretty grassed garden leads down to the loch shore where from which there is a breathtaking view of the Five Sisters of Kintail beyond the head of the loch. It is fascinating to watch the otters playing in the bay and give the pine martens one of their favourite treats of peanut butter. A little stream also runs through the garden - quite idyllic then, but care may be required with young children.

Map & Local

Climbers and hill walkers will find so many challenges right on the doorstep, from the Five Sisters to the Cuillins across the Skye Bridge.

Those interested in wildlife will find there are two nearby otter centres. One is the Bright Water centre on the island of Eilean Ban under the Bridge (open in the summer - there is a Visitor Centre at Kyleakin) while the other at Kylerhea on Skye is perhaps best accessed by the little turntable ferry which operates from Easter to October from Glenelg.

For a great day out, go over the Bridge, perhaps taking in Eilean Donan on the way, then head down to Kylerhea from just before Broadford - the scenery on the little hill road is spectacular - and you can return via the ferry.

Then, too, all the delights of Skye await you. As befits what is perhaps Scotland's most popular holiday isle they are too numerous to mention. Suffice it to say you can be there in under an hour or continue on the mainland to the lovely village of Plockton with its palm tree-lined street and excellent eating places.

There is much to do during a stay at Letterfearn, but the immediate surroundings are such that you may well prefer to use your time there simply to completly recharge your batteries. Whatever you choose to do or not to do, it is a great place to be!
