Its name means ‘Plain of White Silver’ and the house has a very contemporary look and feel throughout. The impressive, part double height living area is open plan with comfortable seating looking out over the garden at one end. There are enormous French doors that flood the room with light and open out onto a charming paved patio area (with furniture). There is a dining area alongside that leads through to a smart, modern kitchen that is very well-equipped and has plenty of place for cooking. There is also a handy utility room that houses the laundry facilities.
A corridor leads along to two downstairs bedrooms, a double and a twin. The double bedroom has a stylish en suite shower room with a large walk-in shower and the twin room makes use of a separate family bathroom.
Upstairs on the mezzanine level is a double bedroom that is open to the living area. There is plenty of room for everyone to spread out at Mag Findargat as there is an additional sitting room upstairs. There is a wood-burning stove with feature flue at its heart and plenty of cosy seating to curl up on. It even has a feature oriel window where you can sit and admire the lovely views out across Loch Dunvegan towards the Outer Isles. The house has air source underfloor central heating that keeps it nice and toasty whilst also having good ‘green credentials’.
Outside, there is a gravelled parking area with space for up to 2 cars and a large grassed enclosed garden that leads off into the wild hillside behind.
The famous, award-winning Three Chimneys Restaurant (0.3 miles) is in easy walking distance. As it is right on the coast it has beautiful sea views to enjoy while you sample the excellent food, most of which is made with locally sourced ingredients.
Dunvegan (4.5 miles) has a PO and a couple of little shops and eateries. It is also home to the Giant MacAskill Museum that details the life of Angus MacAskill who was known for standing at an impressive 7ft 9 inches tall and having incredible strength.
A mile out of the town is Dunvegan Castle, that has been home to the MacLeod clan for generations and is said to be the oldest continually habited castle in Scotland. You can tour part of the castle and see some precious family heirlooms including the Fairy Flag, wander round the lovely gardens or take a boat trip out on Loch Dunvegan to see the resident seal colony.
Skye has over 1,300 miles of beautiful coastline and the diving centre on the Waternish peninsula offers diving expeditions out in the crystal clear waters. There are dolphins, giant plankton feeders, minke whales and even basking sharks to be spotted, as well as several shipwrecks.
Portree (23 miles) is the best place to stock up on supermarket supplies and the Aros Community Centre just outside the town has lots of information on events and attractions on the island, as well as a cinema, theatre, gift shop, café and children’s play area.
If you head over to the west coast from the house you will find the Neist Point Lighthouse (6 miles). It is a great viewing point from which to see dolphins, whales and basking sharks, as well as a wide array of seabirds. Skye enjoys some of the darkest skies in Europe so the island is ideal for stargazing – you may even see the famous Aurora Borealis or ‘Northern Lights’.
