The house has been laid out with the aim of making the very most of the wonderful surrounding vistas and is bright and inviting throughout due to its semi-open plan layout. The sitting room, with its comfy seating, has windows on three sides and doors out to the garden and is joined with a wide opening to a modern dining kitchen that can be curtained off for added cosiness in the evenings.
From the kitchen a further opening leads through to the breakfasting room/sunroom that has double height windows and is most comfortable for relaxing and taking in the scenery. Also downstairs is a en suite twin bedroom, a WC and a utility room.
On the mezzanine level that looks down on the breakfasting area there is further seating and the colourful master bedroom has yet more great views, a luxurious king-size bed, an en suite shower room with a huge shower and even its own dressing room. The second double bedroom doesn’t fail to impress either as it also has a king-size bed, en suite bathroom and dressing room.
A sizeable grassed garden surrounds the house with views out over the fields to the water and beautiful mountains of Skye beyond, making it the ideal place to enjoy the local microclimate that is warmed by the Gulf Stream.
Ferries over the Sound of Raasay from Skye run regularly throughout the day and take approximately 25 minutes. As the ferry terminal is so close to the house it is easy to pop back across to take in some of Skye’s many attractions.
The Raasay Community Store just half a mile away has lots of local produce or Portree (16.5 miles) over on Skye has a supermarket to stock up at.
As Raasay is only 14 miles long it is easy to get out exploring its hills, forests and beaches. Walks lead all around the varied landscape and the best vantage point to admire it from is the highest point on the island at the summit of flat-topped Dun Caan (over 1,400 feet tall). Raasay means ‘Isle of the Roe Deer’ and that is just one of the species that can be spotted including mountain hares, otters, sea and golden eagles.
Raasay House (0.75 miles) has a restaurant for bar or evening meals and also arranges outdoor activities such as cycle hire, sea kayaking, coasteering, rock climbing and archery, etc. They also offer cycle hire.
Whisky enthusiasts will want to make sure to fit in a visit to the Isle of Raasay Distillery (0.5 miles). As one of the newer distilleries in Scotland its first official release is not until 2020, but in the meantime the ‘While We Wait’ single malt can be sampled after a distillery tour or, for chocolate lovers, there is a tour that ends with whiskies being paired with delicious handmade chocolates.
