Nestled on Skye’s dramatic Duirinish Penninsula, Soineantachd is a newly-built holiday home which combines contemporary luxury with the warm, welcoming atmosphere of a crofter’s cottage. With awe-inspiring views of Macleod’s Tables - the flat-topped hills Healabhal Mhòr and Healabhal Bheag - and only five minutes from iconic Neist Point, Soineantachd is ideally located for discovering Skye’s rugged coastline, dramatic landscapes and incredible wildlife.
Soineantachd is Gaelic for serenity – a quality that’s in abundance in and around this fabulous two-bedroom cottage, where golden eagles soar majestically in the big, big skies overhead and red deer roam in the valley below. From sunrise to sunset, nature unfolds around Soineantachd in breathtaking, ever-changing displays.
This ultra-modern property overlooks the crofting township of Glendale and is located at the end of a short, steep gravel drive with ample parking for two cars, although vehicles can also be left at the top of the drive. The drive is gated – to prevent wandering sheep eating the wild flowers, orchids and young trees growing naturally in the garden.
The cosy heart of Soineantachd is a stylishly comfortable open-plan living space, where neutral colours are enlivened by splashes of the blues, greens and ochres of the surrounding landscape. Welcoming sofas, a woodburning stove and uninterrupted views over the Duirinish Penninsula towards Loch Pooltiel provide the perfect spot to unwind after a day of adventures – and plan the next day’s explorations.
The space flows into the chic dining area and a well-equipped kitchen, with lots of space for preparing, cooking and enjoying delicious meals created using Skye’s mouthwatering local produce - such as shellfish bought from the fishermen who land their catch at nearby Meanish Pier.
Large sliding doors provide easy access from the living space into the property’s extensive garden, where a river runs along the lower boundary. Once a strip of crofting land, these enclosed grounds are now an inviting open space for enjoying the breathtaking scenery, fresh sea air and all-encompassing peace and quiet.
Outdoor footwear and clothing can be stored in the wood-lined entrance hall that leads to the property’s luxurious shower room and two attractively-presented double bedrooms. In each bedroom, the bed is positioned so guests can experience the beauty of the surrounding hills and glens from the moment they wake up.
Soineantachd is a fabulous property on the Isle of Skye, offering the perfect get-away for those seeking adventure, unforgettable wildlife encounters and, of course, serenity.
Welcome to the breathtaking Duirinish Penninsula – shaped by millions of years of geology, changed immeasurably by the Highland Clearances and now a haven for walkers, climbers, wildlife seekers and adventurers.
Enjoy the outstanding views from the summits of the flat-topped MacLeod’s Tables, climb the world-famous Cuillins (only an hour away), explore the out-of-this-world landscape of the Quiraing. The mountains of the far north west of Skye also provide an excellent choice of mountain bike trails, while many of the lochs – including Loch Poolteil, only two miles from Soineantachd - are ideal for kayaking, sailing, paddleboarding and wild swimming.
At the head of Loch Poolteil lies a stunning beach of black volcanic sand where impromptu waterfalls cascade down high cliffs – perfect for a peaceful picnic or a glass of wine while watching the sun set in a blaze of reds, oranges and pinks.
Follow the highest coastal pathway in the UK and walk to Neist Point, with its statuesque Stevenson lighthouse, breathtaking cliffs and a similar rock formation to the Giant’s Causeway. Neist Point is the the best place in Skye to see whales, dolphins, basking sharks and porpoises, while otters are often spotted feasting on sea urchins scooped out of rock pools. In addition, thousands of seabirds nest in the sheer cliffs and the grassy clifftops at Neist Point, including puffins, black guillemots, fulmars and gannets.
Although located in a tranquil and remote glen, Soineantachd is anything but isolated. There’s an excellent vegetarian restaurant - Chidakasha Skye – a 5-minute stroll from the cottage and, for a special treat, the Michelin-starred Three Chimneys is only a 10-minute drive away. Soineantachd is only a mile from Glendale, with its Post Office, village store and coffee shop, and three miles from Colbost, where there’s an artisan jewellery maker – Skye Silver – and the fascinating Colbost Croft Museum.
The nearby village of Dunvegan has craft shops, art galleries, a museum about Dunvegan’s own giant, a deli, a bakery and a choice of eating places that make the very most of Skye’s highly-desirable fresh produce. Magnificent Dunvegan Castle, perched on the edge of Dunvegan Loch, is well worth a visit. Home of the chieftain of the Macleod Clan for over 800 years, Dunvegan Castle and its spectacular gardens are open to the public in the summer months. There are regular boat trips to the local seal colony from the castle jetty and, further along the loch, spectacular Claigan Coral Beach features brilliant white sand lapped by sparkling clear turquoise waters.
Further afield, venture south for a long but rewarding hike around the Point of Sleat, which offers dramatic views over the sea to the isle of Eigg and Rum. Fancy a dram? Talisker Distillery, on the shores of Loch Harport, offers a variety of tours and tastings of Skye’s only single malt. For a day out, the island’s capital, Portree, offers boat hire, watersports, a swimming pool and horseriding, as well as the island’s supermarket, and, at neighbouring Sconser, a nine-hole golf course.
On returning to Soineantachd, look to the skies. Once-in-a-lifetime sightings of golden eagles, meteor showers and the Northern Lights are commonplace in this spectacular corner of Skye.
