Outer Hebrides Ideal Viewing Point for Solar Eclipse
The UK is set to see the deepest solar eclipse since 1999 on Friday, 20 March 2015. The eclipse, which starts at 8.45am and will last for around two hours, is best seen from the north of Scotland and the Outer Hebrides.
In particular, on the isles of North and South Uist and Lewis and Harris up to 95% of the sun’s rays will be blocked out by the new moon. We have a selection of holiday cottages on these islands that should offer a perfect view.
Set on the beautiful island of North Uist, Gearraidh Iain is a cosy retreat for 2 people right by a lovely sandy beach. This charming cottage has a comfortable sitting room with a dining area and exposed stone feature wall with a stove that burns peat. There is a modern kitchen and a warm and inviting double bedroom with a huge walk-in en suite shower.
The island is a wildlife spotters’ paradise and there are plenty of interesting walks nearby. A week’s stay for 2 people starting on Saturday, 14 March is just £495.
Also on North Uist, Boreray Cottage is a charming, traditional thatched roof cottage sleeping 2 people, just yards from the shore with stunning sea views. It features an open plan living area and a romantic double bedroom with a draped four poster bed. It is pet friendly and just a short stroll from some lovely sandy beaches that are ideal for dog walking.
The cottage is only 6 miles from Lochmaddy where there is a watersports centre where you can try sea kayaking and scuba diving. A week’s stay for 2 people starting on Saturday, 14 March is just £445.
Further north on the Isle of Lewis, Marvig is set in the South Lochs area that is dotted with over 200 lochs offering excellent fishing. Sleeping 6, it is the perfect getaway for family or friends with superb views out to sea and two separate sitting rooms so the party can spread out and do their own thing. There are TVs in both sitting rooms - one has an open fire to snuggle up by and the other has a piano. There is a large kitchen diner and two double and two single bedrooms. It is pet friendly and ideally placed for boat trips out to see seals, dolphins, whales and even sharks. A week’s stay for 6 people starting on Saturday, 14 March is just £450.
