It has been lovingly restored and refurbished by its owners with an eye to making it their home in the future. There are lovely views across the Firth of Forth to the Bass Rock from the windows on its first and second floors.
Typically for these old fisherfolk's houses, Pend Garden extends over three floors that are connected by steepish stairs. The owners have used the space in the most rational and sensible way - you cook and eat on the ground floor, relax on the first and sleep on the second, with bathroom facilities on the top two levels.
Being what it is and where it is, the cottage can reasonably be assumed to have loads of character and it does not disappoint. The smart modern kitchen is large and well equipped and the separate dining room, which is bright and sunny by day and cosy by night, is perfect for family dinners.
On the first floor, the sitting room runs the entire length of the house and two distinct seating areas mean that children can play at one end while adults relax undisturbed at the other.
On the top floor, the bedrooms are also a revelation, being far larger than one might expect. Being up so high, they get all the sun that’s going, are furnished in light, restful colours and, best of all, have spectacular and uninterrupted views over the Firth of Forth.
Unusually for the houses which huddle round the harbour here, the cottage has behind it a delightful, enclosed, south-facing garden, again with fine views. It is just perfect for children to play in safely and for adults to relax with a glass of wine on a summer's evening.
St Monans is a pretty village with a famous seafood restaurant situated just yards from the cottage, as well as shops, a pub and a cafe.
You can strike out in either direction along the Fife coastal trail and look out for seals and dolphins in the Firth. Take boat trips from nearby Elie to view the seabird colonies on the Bass Rock, or strike inland to visit Falkland Palace, Kellie Castle and the like.
Most of the small villages along the coast have their own often excellent golf course and of course famous St Andrews is just a few minutes drive up the road. The beaches there and at Tentsmuir, just a little further on, are long and often almost empty expanses of beautiful golden sands.
This is an ideal venue for a quiet and relaxing holiday, but if you do wish to explore further afield, half an hour will bring you to the M90 Perth-Edinburgh motorway, which will whisk you north or south. Another alternative is to catch the train from Cupar (14m) or Kirkcaldy (17m) into Edinburgh (47m) across the famous Forth Bridge.
