Situated in a lovely secluded position high in the green and purple Border hills some 10 miles south of Selkirk (with all facilities) and with views to die for over the unspoilt Borthwick valley is Easter Harden Cottage - there is not another house in sight!
Reached by a private drive the cottage is a delightful and comfortable holiday retreat from the cares of the world. Inside, the rather imposing entrance hall provides an enticing foretaste of more good things to come. The cottage is south-facing, bright and sunny and is kept really warm in all seasons with its wood-burning stove, electric heating and double-glazed windows.
The cottage is most elegantly and comfortably furnished and is situated so that that there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the lovely views from many of the rooms. The bright and cosy sitting room in particular has windows aplenty, and of course the doors to the garden offer instant access when you can’t wait a moment longer to get out there and enjoy.
The dining kitchen is modern and well-equipped with the table right by the window, so you don’t miss a thing. It is made particularly warm by the electric Aga (full instructions given for non-Aga experts).
Being all on one level makes Easter Harden a cottage for all age groups and levels of mobility. The three excellent bedrooms, two doubles and a single, are all spacious and charmingly furnished, and the master bedroom boasts both a king size bed and en suite shower room with walk-in shower. A third separate WC is another useful feature.
Outside, the cottage stands in its own enclosed garden grounds (with summer house and furniture). Children can play far from traffic and adults can relax and unwind in glorious surroundings. The cottage also has a small barn housing a table tennis table for visitors' use.
There is superb walking in the hills around, straight from the doorstep. This is traditional riding country - visitors can bring their own horse by arrangement, or mounts can be hired nearby.
Visitors can enjoy bird-watching and mountain biking. Craik Forest, reputedly the largest man-made forest in Europe, is close by, with many woodland trails to explore by foot or on two wheels.
Cyclists are spoilt for choice in this area, with the famous 7 Stanes trails at Glentress near Peebles and an excellent downhill trail at Innerleithen. The local roads are both beautifully quiet and beautifully scenic. A particularly lovely drive is from the cottage over the hill to the Tushielaw Inn and on to St Mary’s Loch, which offers sailing, windsurfing and idyllic picnic places. Just a little further towards Moffat is the spectacular waterfall known as the Grey Mare’s Tail.
Hawick (5 miles), the 'home of cashmere', is the nearest place for shopping and it also has pubs, restaurants and a swimming pool. The many stately homes, gardens and country houses for which the Borders are famous are also within an easy distance.
Further afield, Edinburgh can be reached in an hour and a half's drive, or 50 minutes by train from Galashiels (17.5 miles), and you are almost equidistant between the beaches of the Berwickshire coast to the east and the Solway coast to the west.
