Meadows Lodge is one of three sister lodges where a tranquil countryside setting combines with outstanding views and the fact that they are only 5 minutes’ drive from all the handy shops and amenities of the town of Lauder (2 miles).
Open plan living is very much the order of the day in this contemporary lodge, where the main living accommodation is spacious and bright and the chat doesn’t have to stop at meal times as everything is in together. The well-equipped kitchen has a useful island (with seating) and is just across from the dining area, while cosy seating is set up around the wood-burning stove so that both the fire and the fantastic view can be admired.
Pull back the sliding glass door by the seating to discover the lodge’s hidden treasure – a delightful terrace with not only garden seating but a gorgeous sunken hot tub. What could be more relaxing than sinking back into the bubbles against the backdrop of that wonderful scenery?
Guests are greeted in the morning by the wonderful outlook through the glass door in the en suite double bedroom, which is a great place to enjoy morning coffee whilst deciding what the day should bring.
A gate from the grounds provides direct access to the Southern Upland Way long distance walking route. This coast to coast route stretches all the way from Portpatrick over to Cockburnspath, covering 212 miles in total, and can be followed in either direction.
Lauder (2 miles) is home to a 9 hole parkland golf course that welcomes visitors to play a round or two and the town is also the place to head to for meals out. Lauder Common Riding Week takes place in August each year and sees huge processions of horses that really are quite an impressive sight.
The little Flat Cat Gallery has a lovely range of artwork on display by local artists and also has a café to stop at after exploring everything. A tour of 16th century Thirlestane Castle (with one of their knowledgeable volunteers) just outside the town is also an absolute must.
At Bird Gardens Scotland CIC at Oxton (6 miles) there are beautiful species of birds that might not be expected to be found in the Borders. With cranes, parrots, emus, parrots and stunning flamingos, along with snakes, tortoises and even wallabies, it is really fascinating to see the important work of this conservation programme.
In the market town of Kelso (19 miles) the original charming cobbled square has been retained and is now home to monthly farmers’ markets where some delicious treats can be picked up. The shops that line the square are well worth visiting and there is a good choice of pubs and restaurants as well.
Those who like getting out and about on two wheels will love taking advantage of the quiet country roads or trying out the graded mountain biking trails at the excellent 7Stanes centres at Innerleithen (20 miles) and Glentress forest (24 miles).
