Tanner Lodge is one of a set of three attractive lodges which offer wonderful, expansive views out over the delightful surrounding countryside and Thirlestane Castle off in the distance, set against a peaceful rural backdrop just 2 miles from the charming Borders town of Lauder.
Once inside, the outlook can’t help but dominate the room in the most pleasant way and, once a fire is crackling away in the wood-burning stove, the cosy atmosphere really starts to develop. The handy island’s breakfast bar seating is a great place to start the morning whilst taking in the amazing, ever-changing view. There is also a more formal dining area to gather at for evening meals and a chance to catch up on the day’s adventures.
The huge glass doors slide back to reveal the terrace at the front of the house where the highlight is a sunken hot tub with that impressive vista laid out right before it. It is the most idyllic setting in which to fully sink into holiday mode and let the jets soothe any worries away.
Both of the double bedrooms are as inviting as each other with patio doors that perfectly frame the gorgeous scene outside and allow the outdoors to be brought inside. They are also equipped with their own contemporary en suite shower rooms, effectively creating two separate suites.
Much though it’ll be difficult to leave behind the comfort of the house and the bubbles of the hot tub, there are so many activities to try and sights to take in nearby that a week’s stay may well not be long enough.
Walkers will be in their element as the Southern Upland Way walking route is practically right on the doorstep with a gate that leads directly out to it. Whilst walking the whole 212-mile route may be ambitious, the section that runs down to Melrose is very picturesque and crosses over the beautiful River Tweed. Melrose is good to stop at for a restorative coffee or well-deserved lunch before heading home.
There is plenty to see and do in Melrose (9.5 miles) so it is worth popping back by car to take time to fully appreciate it all. The historic 12th century Melrose Abbey, which sits unassumingly just off the shopping area, is remarkably intact to this day and has a fascinating history to discover on a walk around its grounds. Don’t forget to look out for the little bagpipe playing pig gargoyle!
Lauder (2 miles) is well catered for with a bakery, grocery shop, butcher and a selection of other shops to wander around. There is a choice of places to eat out at as well with excellent meals on offer at the Black Bull Hotel restaurant and The Lauderdale.
A visit to the Spotty Dog deli/café on the main street is a must for picking up a lovely range of meats and cheeses or trying their delicious coffee, sandwiches and bacon rolls.
From Lauder it is easy to pop up to Edinburgh to explore the fascinating capital city either by car (just over half an hour’s drive) or by jumping on the train at Galashiels (8.5 miles). Make sure to take in the National Gallery of Scotland where there are amazing pieces on display from Rembrandt, Monet and Van Gogh (to name but a few) that are truly awe inspiring.
