Occupying a peaceful rural setting within a beautiful 18th century steading is Stable Cottage, a splendid traditional hideaway that sits in the midst of the Cairnsmore Estate, near Newton Stewart (5 miles) in Dumfries and Galloway.

Previously the dining space for some of the estate workers, they may be hard pressed to recognise it these days as it has undergone quite the makeover. In the sitting room the wood-burning stove keeps everything cosy and positively encourages guests to unwind on its comfy sofas or over on the window seat with the garden views.
The generously sized farmhouse kitchen is very well-equipped and the solid dining table alongside makes it the ideal socialising space for informal breakfasts or sampling the nominated cook’s efforts. From the kitchen there is direct access out to the pretty, lawned garden where the relaxed pace of country life can be fully appreciated.
In the family bathroom the double-ended bath just begs to be luxuriated in and there is also the convenience of the shower over it. The flagstones used throughout keep toes surprisingly toasty due to the underfloor heating and it is all set out on one level with two beautifully presented bedrooms, a double and a twin, that both enjoy views of the garden to the rear.
Outside, the enclosed garden is south-facing so it gets plenty of sun and seating allows for a close up look at the cheeky wee red squirrels who like to pop by for a snack or two. Secure storage is provided in the garage in the courtyard for bikes and sporting equipment, etc. Stable Cottage’s sister property, Tackroom Cottage opposite (sleeps 4) can be let as well for groups looking to holiday together but still have space and privacy.
The former fishing village Creetown (4 miles) is a good stop off point for shopping or a meal out. Enjoy a round of golf on the wonderful 18 hole parkland golf course in Newton Stewart (5 miles) that is also the destination for supermarket shopping or taking in a little history at the Newton Stewart Museum where a collection of antiques and vintage clothing can be admired.
At the Wild Goat Park (10 miles) the resident hairy, horned goats are an unexpected delight but there are actually quite a few out in the surrounding countryside as well as on the park itself. There is even the chance to feed them some carrots, although they also welcome their favourite treat of mint humbugs.
The amazing 7stanes mountain biking centre at Kirroughtree (2.5 miles) is only a 10 minute drive away and once those trails have been conquered there is another excellent centre at Glentrool (16 miles) to tackle. The Sustrans National Cycle Network also runs right by the cottage so the quiet local roads can be taken advantage of.
Not only is the Galloway Forest Park (7 miles) a great spot to explore woodland walking trails and spot wildlife, it was also Europe’s First Dark Sky Park as it is one of the best places in Europe to stargaze. In the right conditions the stars are so bright they can be seen with the naked eye so there is no need for a telescope.
A wealth of eateries can be found over on the coast at Portpatrick (33 miles) where the picturesque harbour is lovely to walk around and watch the boats coming and going against the backdrop of the pastel coloured houses.
