What started out life as the tack room for the stable block has since been carefully renovated whilst ensuring that charming original elements such as the stone walls remain in pride of place. The attractive flagstone floors have been kept throughout the ground floor and are now kept toasty with the welcome installation of underfloor heating.
The bright, dual aspect sitting room benefits from both an outlook over the courtyard and one out towards the garden. A stone feature wall provides the perfect backdrop for the fire crackling away in the wood-burning stove and there is also a handy dining table that folds neatly away when not in use. The beautiful Edwardian bed in the colourful downstairs double bedroom is very inviting and even the shower room has an amazing stone window focal point.
At the top of the steep wooden stairs is an incredibly spacious master bedroom where a huge super king-size bed can be found beneath the traditional, wooden beamed ceiling and the glass balustrades allow for uninterrupted views. The raised seating area is perfect for curling up with a good book and a cuppa and the room’s layout can be flexible too, as the bed can be kept as is or configured as twin beds as required.
Over the way from the house is a fully enclosed lawned garden with a lovely addition in the form of two hay barns with granite columns, one of which houses a sheltered seating and BBQ area. Tackroom’s sister property, Stable Cottage, is in a handy spot just opposite across the pretty courtyard and is able to accommodate 4 more guests for larger groups.
Please note: This cottage is not suitable for children under 13 years old.
As the cottage sits at the foot of Cairnsmore of Fleet, Cairnsmore meaning ‘big hill’, a walk up to the summit is sure to be one of the first things to try. The long distance Southern Upland Way walking route, which stretches all the way over from Cockburnspath on the east coast to Portpatrick (33 miles) in the west, can easily be joined nearby.
The surrounding area is a haven for wildlife with red deer and cute red squirrels often being seen as well as buzzards and red kites gliding in the skies above. Further walks can be had on the old railway track within the Cairnsmore of Fleet National Nature Reserve where an array of wildflowers and even more wildlife can be seen including peregrine falcons with their distinctive yellow feet.
In Creetown (4 miles), there is a shop for basic supplies and a pub restaurant, The Lairds Inn, with not only great food but a warm welcome too. The town is also known for the Creetown Gem Rock Museum that has a surprisingly striking collection of precious gemstones from all over Scotland. The crystal cave is fascinating as the gems appear to glow fluorescent against the darkened room.
A choice of graded mountain bike trails can be found in Kirroughtree Forest (2.5 miles) and there is the chance to experience not one but two superb 7stanes mountain biking centres with the second in easy reach at Glentrool (16 miles).
Grab some supermarket shopping in Newton Stewart (5 miles) where the Crafty Distillery produces excellent gin and vodka with an innovative bottle that has a measure cleverly built into the stopper. An array of activities are available at the Galloway Activity Centre (25 miles) where there is archery, laser tag, kayaking, windsurfing and the opportunity to tackle the 25 foot climbing tower with a thrilling zip wire descent back down from the top.
