Located half a mile along a private track from the Aberchalder swing bridge, on the far side of the A82 Inverness-Fort William road and 4 miles from Invergarry (home to a historic inn and the prestigious Glengarry Hotel), the cottage sits in a south-facing position with views towards the Monadliath Mountains. The Aberchalder Estate, covering 16,000 acres of woodlands, mountains, lochs, and rivers, provides a spectacular backdrop. Just a field away, the River Oich, where salmon and trout fishing can be arranged, flows towards Loch Oich, one of the most scenic sections of the Caledonian Canal.
A traditional porch shelters the entrance, offering space for outdoor gear and dog leads. Inside, the sitting room features a wood-burning stove, a comfortable sofa and armchair, and a TV—ideal for unwinding after a day outdoors.
The well-equipped kitchen/diner includes an electric cooker, microwave, and fridge-freezer, along with a small dining table and chairs. Outside, the large enclosed garden has a barbecue and picnic bench, perfect for outdoor dining.
The double bedroom is quiet and comfortable, with views across the valley to the river. The bathroom, accessible from both the bedroom and hall, has a bath with an overhead shower.
The gravel driveway provides ample parking, and the fenced garden offers a secure space for dogs. Wildlife is abundant, with golden eagles, red squirrels, pine martens, badgers, and various deer species often spotted nearby. Down by the river, you may also see otters, herons, or even ospreys.
Leac Cottage offers a charming, peaceful escape in the Highlands, with spectacular scenery, wildlife, and outdoor activities right on the doorstep.
Leac Cottage sits in the heart of The Great Glen, a 65-mile fault line stretching from Inverness to Fort William. The dramatic mountain scenery shelters Loch Ness, Loch Oich, and Loch Lochy, all linked by Thomas Telford’s Caledonian Canal, which allows boats to cross northern Scotland by the shortest route. Aberchalder, 37 miles south of Inverness and 27 miles north of Fort William, overlooks the River Oich, Loch Oich, and the canal.
The estate lies between two key routes to the northwest coast and Skye. Nearby, Fort Augustus (4 miles) has shops, hotels, and a striking flight of canal locks, while Invergarry (3 miles) has a pub and hotel. Within the estate, the Glengarry Castle Hotel, where the previous Laird was born, sits alongside the ruins of Glengarry Castle, where Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed on his way to Culloden.
This area is ideal for walking, fishing, and wildlife spotting, with red and roe deer, pine martens, golden eagles, and grouse often seen. The Great Glen Way offers a scenic 14-mile route to Loch Lochy and back. Those seeking a challenge can drive 28 miles to Ben Nevis before tackling its 4,413-foot summit.
For history lovers, Eilean Donan Castle is an hour’s drive, while Urquhart Castle, a spectacular ruin overlooking Loch Ness, is just 30 minutes away - perfect for Nessie spotting. The Road to the Isles and ‘Monarch of the Glen’ country are also within easy reach.
In winter, Aonach Mòr (20 miles) offers skiing, while summer sees it transform into a mountain biking hotspot, featuring a World Championship downhill course. If that sounds too energetic, relax and watch boats pass along the canal, or visit Fort Augustus, where cascading locks run through the village, lined with cafés and pubs.
Leac Cottage is also a great base for fishing, with salmon and trout available on the River Oich. Golfers can head to Castle Stuart Golf Links in Inverness (47 miles), one of Scotland’s top courses.
Whether you’re here for adventure or relaxation, Leac Cottage is the perfect place to enjoy the beauty of the Highlands.
