Of all the many holiday locations on the glorious north west coast of Scotland, Gairloch, around 70 miles north west of Inverness, must be one of the most desirable. Situated around the sea loch of the same name, with beautiful beaches to hand and some of the best known and challenging mountains of Wester Ross behind.

The village is small enough to be pretty and peaceful yet large enough to have shops, restaurants, hotels and a golf course. On a hill above the bay, Flowerdale Cottage is quietly situated in the heart of the glen on the Gairloch Estate. Formerly the 'Gardeners cottage' to Flowerdale House the seat of the Mackenzies of Gairloch, the cottage is bordered to the rear by a large walled garden with tantalising glimpses of the sea loch. Beyond the sheltered woodland with its many wild flowers and wildlife lies a private picturesque waterfall, so care should be taken with children, who will nevertheless be excited by this pretty natural water feature.
Inside, the cottage has been very well refurbished with a new and very spacious kitchen/breakfast room and utility room, a separate dining room, cosy sitting room with wood-burning stove and a downstairs bedroom and bathroom.
Upstairs are two further charming bedrooms and a shower room. Flowerdale cottage really is a great house for a family holiday. Few cottages boast the privacy and history of Flowerdale Cottage.
This area is one of the jewels in the crown of the west Highlands, numerous beaches are within walking distance of the cottage and within a short drive provide great entertainment for children as does the trekking centre, located further up the private drive on the estate.
Adults can wander down the same drive to a cosy pub at the bottom (circa 6 mins walk) for a drink or something more substantial.
South of Gairloch lies Loch Maree, the fourth largest freshwater loch in Scotland boasting salmon and sea trout fishing and numerous beautiful islands which can be explored from boat and on foot.
The Gairloch estate expands south to, and forming part of, the renowned Torridon Mountain range and the estate can give advice on specific walks and climbs if required. To the north, there are the famous sub-tropical gardens at Inverewe from where you can continue up to Ullapool.
