With the scene outside ever-changing as light dances on the water the views may well distract from the cosy interior, which is very elegantly presented throughout. The estate workers who originally lived here would certainly be impressed by the transformation that it has undergone during its refurbishment. At its heart the welcoming sitting room is kept toasty by a wood-burning stove that the seating is centred around and the kitchen is roomy and bright with a chic dining area and more of those lovely views.
The rope handrail up the staircase continues the smart, nautical theme and leads up to a sunny landing that the two bedrooms lead off from. The stylish double bedroom and cheerful twin bedroom both have window seats to make the most of the fabulous outlook towards the loch and there is another to be found in the shower room that lies in between the two.
Everything really is spread out immediately in front of the door with the incredible vista of the water and mountains beyond being enough to take one’s breath away. The open front garden is an idyllic spot to pull up a chair and take it all in no matter what time of day and there is direct access right down to the loch shore (care should be taken, particularly with children).
Parking is just to the side of the house and a little footpath leads down to the wonderful sands of Gairloch beach only ¼ of a mile away that is sure to be one of the first places to explore. This glorious long stretch of sheltered beach is particularly picturesque at sunset when the sky becomes an absolute riot of colour.
Wildlife boat cruises are available from the pier just across from the cottage so it is easy to jump onboard and the experienced guides know the best places to spot everything from otters and seals to dolphins and white-tailed sea eagles. There is also a glass-bottomed boat tour that offers a unique, close-up perspective on the fascinating marine life.
Whale watching tours also depart from the pier offering the chance to see these incredible mammals in their natural habitat in the North Minch. Bird watchers will be in their element on the cruise that goes to the Shiant islands which is a haven for a staggering array of nesting seabirds including colourful puffins.
It is but a short wander along to a surprisingly well-stocked little shop that is a good place to grab the essentials and has a great range of local products. There is also a café just next door to it to stop at for lunch or just a cuppa and a tasty slice of cake after time spent out and about sightseeing.
The Gairloch Estate extends to over 53,000 acres and it is worth the walk out to the pretty Flowerdale Falls within the estate which takes around an hour and a half. Nearby Victoria Falls (7.5 miles) by Loch Maree is also in easy reach and is particularly impressive when it swells after rainfall.
Equestrians will want to head to the Gairloch Trekking Centre (11 miles) who cater for all levels of ability and lead treks along Red Point beach which is an experience not to be forgotten! Gairloch village (1.5 miles) is home to a 9 hole golf course, an interesting museum set in a former nuclear bunker and a pub/restaurant with lots of fresh seafood.
