Everything is easily to hand in the cottage’s main living area as it is open plan with comfy seating that has been set up in front of the large picture windows in order to showcase the wonderful loch views and allow for wildlife spotting.
The kitchen area is neat and well-equipped and the dining area is lovely and bright due to the French doors that lead out to the garden alongside.
There is a walk-in shower in the thoroughly modern shower room and the cottage is all on the one level with a stylish and cosy double bedroom.
Parking is right by the door and the enclosed garden is laid to grass with wonderful views out towards Loch Dunvegan where the little islands provide welcome resting points for seals.
Larger parties can book the cottage along with its adjoining sister property, Melrose House, that can accommodate a further 6 people.
Foodies will certainly want to try out the gastronomic delights on offer at the famous Three Chimneys Restaurant (1 mile) that is in easy walking distance just 10 minutes away, although booking in advance is a must.
Also in walking distance is The Colbost Croft Museum that has a reconstructed house resembling one of the traditional blackhouses that would have been commonplace on the island back in the 1800s. The open fire right in the centre of the room makes for a rather smoky atmosphere but it is fascinating to see how the local people would have once lived.
Dunvegan Castle, the seat of the chief of Clan McLeod, is interesting to take a tour of and the extensive grounds are a beautiful place to spend an afternoon wandering around. The water garden is particularly pretty with its ornate bridges and lovely waterfalls and there are boat trips that run out on the loch for a close up view of the seals basking on the rocks and islands.
No trip would be complete without a day on the beach and the one at Claigan (10 miles) is a real beauty. What looks like coral underfoot is actually crushed seaweed that has been bleached by the sun. The little uninhabited island off the beach can be reached at low tide (check tide times first) for further exploration.
An excursion out to see the lighthouse at Neist Point (6.5 miles) should surely be on the agenda. This interesting landmark dates back to 1900 and is still in operation to this day, although it is now operated remotely. A clifftop path leads from the parking area out to the lighthouse – it can be steep in places but the amazing views you are greeted by when you get there make it all worthwhile! Whales and even basking sharks have been spotted out in the water so be sure to keep your eyes peeled.
