The cottage has been set up as the ideal base for exploring the estate and the wonderful surrounding countryside. Inside, the wood-burning stove in the sitting room keeps everything nice and toasty and the dining area is cleverly set out by the window to allow for bird watching, wildlife spotting or simply admiring the view. A handy pulley rack in the spacious kitchen is great for drying clothes after days spent outdoors.
Both bedrooms, a double and a twin, are generously sized and lovely and bright throughout. The accommodation is all laid out on one level with a modern bathroom that has a bath and rainfall shower over, as well as the added luxury of cosy underfloor heating.
A small, enclosed garden surrounds the cottage and off road parking is just outside the gated grounds behind the house. A picnic bench and table in the garden allow for al fresco dining whilst taking in the wonderful scenery that is laid out before you.
The estate’s Dalmunzie Castle Hotel (0.25 miles) is a great place to head to for a drink or a meal in the restaurant there.
The nearby Glen Taitneach and Ben Gulabin mountains are a great place to head to for a walk straight from the estate. A shorter walk leads to the base of Ben Gulabin then if you’re still feeling energetic you can carry on up Glen Taitneach for some pretty amazing views of the beautiful landscape.
Hire ski equipment from the Outdoor Centre at Gulabin (2 miles) before taking to the slopes at Glenshee (7 miles) or give one of the activities on offer at the centre a go such as abseiling, canyoning, rock climbing or the thrilling ‘leap of faith’. Bike hire is also available there.
The 64 mile Cateran Trail runs past the estate with the opportunity to walk on some of the routes used by the Caterans that the route is named after who were infamous cattle thieves from the Middle Ages. The trail is well signposted with some of the waymarkers being particularly distinctive as they have carved depictions of drover’s faces on them.
A pub that serves excellent food can be found at Kirkmichael (14 miles) or the Strathardle Inn just outside Kirkmichael is also a good place to try if a break from cooking beckons.
This is Highland Games country and both Braemar (16 miles) and Ballater (33 miles) hold their own every year. The Braemar Gathering every September is particularly famous as it usually has a very special guest – her Majesty the Queen, often accompanied by other members of the Royal family.
The Wee House of Glenshee (7 miles) is a welcome pit stop when out and about exploring as it has an excellent café and interesting shop to wander round and pick up some souvenirs to take back home.
