This stunning estate sits on a peninsula within a large meander of the River Tweed and offers miles of woodland walks and riverside trails to explore as well as a tearoom where you can enjoy a light lunch or tasty cake. Children can bring their bicycles and explore the Estate to their heart's content.
Offering the best of both worlds, the cottage enjoys a quiet rural situation surrounded by wonderful countryside and yet is still in easy reach of the Iocal amenities and attractions which include a large number of abbeys, castles and stately homes. With open fields, rolling hills and woodland all around this really is the ideal place to relax and get away from it all.
Inside, the sitting room has comfy seating and large French doors that perfectly frame a wonderful view of the Eildon hills that can be seen for miles around. The French doors lead out to a lovely large enclosed garden laid mainly to grass with a patio seating area that is perfect for enjoying some al fresco dining.
A wood-burning stove in the formal dining room keeps everything cosy and the neat, modern kitchen is supplemented by a sizeable utility room that houses the laundry facilities and, with a door that leads directly outside, provides handy space for drying wet coats, boots, etc. There is also a colourful bathroom with a bath and separate walk-in shower on this level, as well as a double bedroom that has further French doors out to the garden.
Upstairs is a further bathroom and double and twin bedrooms that have lovely views out over the surrounding countryside.
Off road parking is right by the door and a short stroll across the courtyard behind the cottage brings you to a sweet little tearoom that serves delicious cakes and has a furniture studio to have a rummage about.
Walkers and cyclists have acres of countryside to explore all around and pretty walks along the banks of the river. A section of the St Cuthbert’s Way long distance walking route also passes very close by in Melrose and runs out to the Harestanes Visitor Centre.
With the Eildons' presence so evident throughout the cottage it is well worth climbing them to be rewarded with some magnificent expansive views of the whole of the surrounding area. It is a great place to take in the sights and plan some of the other interesting places to visit during your stay.
Newtown St Boswells (2.5 miles) is the nearest place for stocking up on supplies, although online grocery deliveries can also be easily arranged. If a night off from cooking is on the agenda then the two excellent restaurants in St Boswells (3 miles) are definitely worth a try.
Melrose (2.5 miles) offers a whole range of independent retailers including a butcher, baker, fishmonger and fruit and veg shop, as well as a small supermarket. The town boasts many pubs and restaurants as well as Melrose Abbey and the Trimontium Roman Heritage Centre. The train station at Tweedbank (4.5 miles) provides easy access up to Edinburgh where there are all the shops you could wish for, as well as historical landmarks to visit including imposing Edinburgh Castle itself, the towering Scott’s Monument in Princes Street gardens and the Queen’s official Scottish residence Holyrood Palace.
For those looking for more strenuous activities there is mountain biking at Glentress, clay pigeon shooting at Braidwood, as well as numerous golf courses nearby.
It is under an hour’s drive across to the pretty sandy beaches on the Berwickshire coastline that are great fun to walk along whatever the weather with rock pools to investigate and waves to dodge along the way. A bit further down the coast a tidal causeway crosses to Holy Island that is the home of the famous Lindesfarne Mead, a fortified wine made with honey – be sure to check the tide times before crossing over or your visit may be longer than you anticipated.
