The Folly’s peaceful setting is just part of its charm sitting as it does surrounded by woodland and the sound of birds singing in the trees. Inside, the interior has been refurbished and modernised throughout whilst traditional features such as the original tiled floor and pretty stained glass windows have been retained. The large stone fireplace with its wood-burning stove creates an inviting focal point and ensures cosiness throughout.
The kitchen area is neat and well thought out with a breakfast bar that provides dining just for two and a spiral staircase then leads upstairs to the mezzanine level where the cosy double bedroom has been set out.
Parking is just down the path and the large decked seating area to the side of the house is the ideal place to make the most of the captivating river views. It is just a short walk down to the river’s edge and there are plenty of other lovely riverside walks within the Estate. The Estate’s tearoom provides the perfect spot to relax with some restorative tea and a slice of cake after your walk.
As part of a conservation-focused Estate with stunning woodland walks and riverside trails, The Folly is perfect for those seeking a relaxing and peaceful retreat surrounded by nature and wildlife
The house is reached by half a mile of country track that is negotiable by normal cars when driven slowly and with care.
It is just a short, pleasant stroll along to the tearoom on the estate that is a great place to stop off for a drink, cake or lunch followed by a look around the antique/book shop.
To fully appreciate The Folly’s picturesque situation head up to nearby Scott’s View (4 miles) which is a wonderful viewpoint from which to take in the expanse of the winding River Tweed and the beautiful Eildon hills in the background.
Stock up on basic supplies at the small supermarket in Newtown St Boswells or head into Melrose (3.5 miles) for a browse around the interesting range of shops where meat, fresh produce and seafood can be picked up as well as wine, gifts and souvenirs. There are also a good range of pubs, restaurants and eateries with everything from bar meals to fine dining to choose from.
One of Melrose’s main draws is the 12th century Melrose Abbey that stands right at the heart of the town. It is open to the public (admission fee payable) and is quite fascinating to wander around and picture in its full glory back when it was a working monastery.
The Abbey is just one of four in the Borders with the others spread out across the surrounding area at Dryburgh, Kelso and Jedburgh. These can all be visited on foot via the Border Abbeys Way walking route that is 66 miles long but can be completed in sections over a number of days or by bike on the 4 Abbeys Way cycle route.
